Florida QB won't get much pressure and the DBs will be in soft zone coverage 99% of the time. Not good against Florida WR group. Looks like it may be permanent as well. Get used to giving up the 12-20 yard underneath routes and a shit load of zone blitzes. The one called against South Carolina on the last play of the game 3 years ago was a doozy!!!! Cost UM the game. Florida's QB can run as well. They didn't score on FSU and Bama because those teams have speed everywhere on D. I respect Mattison for how he improved the D after Dick Rod but I hope someone younger and better takes over for next year. Mattison is old and his philosophy is still grounded in the 70's and 80's. We need speed on defense. Remember he recruited our current ILB group like Bolden. Florida is really good on defense. Better than both MSU and OSU and their secondary is phenomenal. We will have a tough time in Orlando folks. Especially in a prevent defense package.

Not excited at all. "26 seconds" doesn't like to force turnovers, either.
I sincerely hope it is only for the bowl game. Mattison has proven he can hold TUOS to 42, I hope Harbaugh expects better than that.
Maybe we can get Funk back to coach the OL, too.

I don't think Mattison is going to COMPLETELY alter what we've been doing all year, that wouldn't make any sense. He's going to keep some continuity in the scheme for the bowl game.

And I think he's a "break glass in case of emergency" DC candidate.

I am not talking about scheme guys. Everyone who knows football can line up a scheme. What I am talking about is his "'play calling" at the moment and for a situation. He is not aggressive and Michigan's 3rd down stop percentage was terrible. Mattison did a super job of bringing back defensive fundamentals after the debacle from Rich Rod BUT it is time for someone else after the bowl.

Ok fine then, our play calling will not differ from what we've been doing all year.

We're not going to drastically change the defense because of a different play caller, even if that's what he chose to run in previous years. If we went into a soft zone for more than a few plays, I'd be willing to bet Harbaugh will march right down to Mr. Mattison and tell him to GTFO.

This is Jim's team, not Mattison's, or Hoke's team.

I bet the Florida QB has the best game of his career and ends up passing for like 300+ yards, no INTs, 70% completion rate, and runs for about 80 yards. If you ever want to pad your stats in a positive way as a QB, play a Mattison defense. He will make you look like a genius!

I wonder what he marched down and said to Durkin during the Indiana and OSU games?
Probably something to the effect of "man, our linebackers really show how slow and unathletic they are when we don't have Glasgow in the game"

Our slow linebackers (who also can't get off blocks) and lack of DT depth is what got exposed in those games. Sure, maybe we do something a bit different, but when you lose your defensive tackle who did an amazing job of keeping your linebackers clean to fill the holes, you're going to look bad.

They are slow bud. Watch the clip on Elliot's big run when Bolden was unblocked in the alley. He looks like a turtle and he missed an ankle tackle because of it.
Yep, teams that have the ability to take advantage of slow, unathletic linebackers are going to put up some points on us. Glasgow did an unbelievable job of keeping our linebackers clean and allowing them to plug the holes without any blockers in them. Once he got hurt, our rush D took a MASSIVE hit.

This is one of the biggest things Harbaugh needs to fix in recruiting, athleticism.

AGP. Under the expertise of "26 Seconds" Mattison, we constantly allowed 1st downs on 3rd and long. Much of the blame lies in his disinterest in generating a pass rush.
I'm waiting for my favorite Mattison defense, "he coached Ray Lewis so he must be awesome!" Not so much...

The thing with Mattison's coaching style is that with great individual players/efforts, he is a great coach. The first year under Hoke we had VanBurgen, Kovacs, Martin who all just had special seasons and he ended up doing well as a result. What Mattison is terrible at is taking "good" players, not "great" and having them do anything. He did well at Baltimore because he had 5 future hall of famers on that defense. He was terrible last year. His philosophy was:
  • First 2 quarters, bend but don't break
  • Quarter 3, bend, brake, and don't show up
  • Quarter 4, hope other teams have mercy on us and they just run simple plays
He was really terrible. Even this year, I think he coaches the D-lines and guess where we also struggle to tackle???

He did hold TUOS to 42 two years in a row, so that's pretty good...

I don't know..... Michigan State and Iowa's Defensive schemes are about as "old School" as you can get and they both did very well on Defense this year......

Uh. Old school. MSU is built upon speed, aggressive secondary play and they bring the pressure and win 3rd down 90% of the time. Far from the Mattison philosophy. Iowa wrecked lots of havoc bringing pressure against MSU BUT the Spartans were their 1st real test of the season. Stanford will get them heaps of trouble. What were you watching on defense during the Hoke years? We had NO pass rush and an already shitty coached secondary was torched.
