Word is it's a matter of time until Herman jumps onboard...
So let me give you a resume and see if you can guess who it belongs to-

Awesome coordinator
Great at his job
Wins a natty as a coordinator
Gets a head coaching gig at a mid major where he lights it on fire
Conference championship
BCS bowl win over a top 10 ranked team from the state of florida
Limited head coaching experience
Players love him

Can you guess?

Tom Herman---------- right?

Nope.

Charlie strong.

Now my question to my Longhorn brethren is this---

IF Charlie Strong has proven that his head coaching resume was not enough to handle the job at Texas--- then why in God's name would we go after a coach with the identical resume?

Ummm, Herman is successful as a HC? Strong seems to be a lower-tier type of coach.

Some great comments. Is Herman the flavor of the month/year? It's not like Herman has won at a high level. Don't get me wrong...he is clearly competent and no Hoke. That being said...it is always a risk hiring a new coach. A guy like Dantonio was a good hire and was worth the risk. Look at this background before MSU. He coached under Tressel. He had a solid track record and his style was conducive to Big Ten football.

Yes...Dantonio had help during UM dark ages but still a good hire. I still can't tell you definitively that Herman is going to succeed at Texas. He may do very well at Texas but I wouldn't assume he is going to be Saban or Meyer who clearly were no brainers to hire.

Texas may get the next Dantonio or the next Strong. Don't break the bank. The poster above who compared Strong to Herman is spot on. It's a coin flip. Not saying to not hire Herman but don't pay the guy Saban money. He hasn't earned it.

CFB fans have a global case of a.d.d. Every time some coach makes some noise, he becomes the next great thing. When he returns to earth, crickets....
Dan Mullen
Gary Patterson
Dantonio
Even Rodreguez a couple of years back ( o_O )

These guys were seen as awesome and anyone looking for a coach should break the bank to get them.

RM is right. Herman is the golden boy right now. But even the Herman hero worship has calmed down since Houston' s loss.to Navy. I think he's a great coach, but measuring success at Houston is not the same yardstick as Texas.

Dantonio is a really good coach.

He is.

My point was it takes not much to be "the guy" and it takes even less for him to be knocked off his pedestal.

At this point I'm starting to see a lot of positive remarks about Harbaugh from other fans, but after his next loss they will call him over rated. Fans are fickle as hell.

I see, yes they are fickle. It would be unwise for said fickle fans to downgrade Dantonio based on a tough year after losing his proverbial shirt in players. JH's is different from all mentioned here, he's been wildly successful now in four very different places.

On the topic of hot coaches.
You won't know if they'll be successful at the next level unless given the chance really. I think Herman can be successful, but it'll help if he has the full support of where ever he goes.

On the topic of fickle fans.
JH said it best at his short speech at the UM/Illinois BB game after he was hired.
"Whoever is for us, is for us"
And that's how its gotta be if you're a UM fan.

I like Texas and its fanbase. Had some good times with them. I'd reacch out to Dantonio who apparently doesn't enjoy recruiting. In Texas he wouldn't have to leave the office. He'd have Texas hitting on all "8" in two years.

You thought Jim Harbaugh might be a good coach? Man, you were really going out on a limb with that one.
Trust me when I tell you that I spent significant political capital trying to convince those in Austin that JH should be our target after Mack brown left.

I was greeted (even by our former AD) with the following:

JH is an a$$hole who cares only about JH
JH will NEVER leave SF without a superbowl ring. Trust me. I was in the professional ranks for years. I KNOW him personally. He isn't going anywhere. (Direct quote from former AD Steve Patterson who is obviously as bad at reading the future as he is being an AD).
JH is a great coach but he'll only stick around for a few years until he finds a pro job he wants.
JH is a good coach but he wears people thin after a little while.
JH is too old school to come back to college and have success.

Just a few of the things I was told by "them" at UT.

So, ya--- in my world I was going out on a bit of a limb, sir.

Um, yeah. Because some clown at UT wasn't interested in JH, that means it was a total shock that he is successful here.

Interesting AB.

If I were Dantonio and offered that kind of a job...I might consider it. MSU is the 2nd banana in the state. It is. Sorry MSU. It's like UCLA football vs. USC or UCLA basketball vs. USC.

Getting a big paycheck and an excuse to change scenery...nobody would blame Dantonio and say he was trying to avoid UM. He beat UM plenty.

Dantonio would actually be a solid hire for UT. Good fit like you said. He would have a nice stable of Texas guys who want to come to UT and he runs a physicial type team that fits the Texas culture.

Actually, most Texas HS football is spread offenses, so a "physical type team" isn't terribly accurate.

Yes dipsh!t. When that clown is the AD at the wealthiest university in america- that means that he's an idiot for not pursuing someone that was a sure-fire winner at the college level. If you can't keep up with the adults, go sit back at the kids table.

You're really not good at this. Please work on the reading comprehension thing, and TRY to keep up, 'tard.
This appears to be a struggle for you. Thanks.

OK, but Michigan fans knew who he was. We all wanted him in 2011, after RichRod was fired. In 2014 we wanted him even more.

As for UT, I'm sure you'll get a good guy. Texas is too desirable of a program to stay down for long.
