The latest edition of THE Game reminded me of a comment that Lloyd Carr made on the field in an interview immediately following the Jan. 1, 2008 Capital One Bowl in Orlando. I was there with my son. It was Lloyd's last game before he retired. Michigan came into the game with a record of 8-4, which can only be described as a gross underachievement given the number of future NFL players on the roster. The Wolverines played defending national champion Florida ranked # 9 at the time. Florida was led by Urban Meyer and QB Tim Tebow. Michigan opened up its offense with a prolific spread passing attack, the likes of which had not been seen before or since, and we upset Florida in a nail biter, 41-35. When Lloyd Carr met Urban Meyer at midfield after the game, they spoke for longer than usual with Lloyd seen speaking into Urban's ear. Then, Lloyd was interviewed by TV on the filed. The interview was also broadcast on the PA system in the stadium for all remaining fans to hear. When asked what he said to Urban Meyer, Lloyd replied: "I told him that someday you will retire and your players will play this way for you." Now that Urban Meyer has announced his impending retirement, I truly believe that his team knew, before taking the field, that they were about to play in their head coach's last game in the horseshoe and his last Michigan game. In so doing, they made Lloyd a profit by playing the most inspired game of the year, by far. Now, hopefully, Michigan will regain the upper hand in THE game. Go Blue!
