Miles is the HC at a school that is the only major program in a state that puts the most HS players in the NFL per capita. The recruiting base is very deep and when you consider the talent in neighboring east Texas and Mississippi, it only gets deeper. It also gets raided a lot. Alabama, Auburn, TAMU and most recently Ole Miss have all been successful in raiding Louisiana talent in the last couple of years. That has been troublesome. But in a year with big openings at other schools, it is arguably the most attractive position that is available.
His other problem has been he's made a couple of bad decisions with coordinator picks in the past few years. Chavis was a top-level guy and well paid, but his defenses were prone to give up plays on third down leading to the saying that "was a third and Chavis conversion". He left last year in a contract dispute and is in the middle of a lawsuit with LSU over pay.
The replacement is Kevin Steele, great recruiter, not as good as a game day coach. On offense, he's stuck with his longtime friend Cam Cameron even as the QBs made little in the way of development under his coaching.
As good as he has been, the conference record has been flat since the National Championship rematch loss with Alabama a couple of years ago.
I love the guy. I love what he's done for LSU and think he still can coach somewhere...or would make a heckuva ESPN talking head. Talk about entertaining. But the fact of the matter is he's probably run his course at LSU and with the speculation so public the damage is already being felt in the recruiting class as a couple of recruits have withdrawn their commitment.
The most discuss target is Jimbo Fisher. He can recruit and he does a good job with QBs. No clue on whether LSU would land him but it's a prime gig with a demonstrated willingness to pay...and a TON of pressure.
