I thought, "Man, will there ever be another Michigan coach for whom a Christmas ornament is made?" Or even a Bobblehead (one of which I also have). After all, Harbaugh's was a literally unprecedented hire, in terms of the hype and expectations on the part of fans, alumni, and media--star QB, prodigal son, and erstwhile massively successful coach returns home to save the floundering Blue Blood program--and no matter WHO coaches Michigan next, whether the change is made next year or 5-7 years from now, there will likely never be a hire in college football or any other sport that will carry such a momentous wave of coverage and commercial opportunism. Indeed, in addition to the ornaments and bobbleheads, there was the Turnley book (I have a copy), the framed photos of Bo and Jim (I have one), and the Halloween costumes (my son went trick-or-treating in blue Michigan sweatshirt and Khakis five years ago)!
As I write this, I realize that I really want all of this "Who's going to be the next coach?" talk to go away, on the basis of Jim turning this thing around with a rousing comeback THIS year, and for us to move forward with a most unexpected rise to greater heights in 2021 and beyond with, finally, the right quarterbacks and position coaching that we've lacked the past five years!
Go Blue tomorrow--Beat Penn State!
