Watched the first half live, just watched the 2nd half. That was closer than I expected, although I didn’t love how we had finished the first half.
I am not going to comment too much, but a few things:
- PSU is going to give some teams fits. They really got after the ball on defense, applied a lot of on ball pressure that made it hard to get our sets going. They are quick, not real big but their quickness really bothered us. They chased hard through and around screens, switched a lot. I thought they were really a big reason for why we struggled, I didn’t think it was bad play on our part.
- Really impressed that we answered the defensive bell with them. We had some really great defensive possessions at times, really getting after a quick team. Brown, Eli, Franz, HD with some blocks, just thought we hung tough against a quick team.
- John’s really struggled with the tempo of the game. He let PSU get his clock sped up and he really struggled. He needs to calm down.
- I thought Smith played a very good game. That smaller guard was really pressuring him, and he didn’t panic. Feel like he is always in control.
- Love being a good FT shooting team. Williams at the end, probably not the best but it happens. Otherwise, we are really good.
- Franz will need to keep doing what he’s doing. I just don’t think he’s a great offensive player. I think he really needs to look to score within the system, then get some junk points. He’s done a good job playing tough while somewhat struggling.
- HD is the most important guy the team right now. When he’s not on the floor against a quality team, our offense just isn’t good.
- I will mainly give PSU credit for fighting through, but we needed to be better on our screens and needed to come off of them sharper. We really struggled to shake guys.
- I like how they responded. Could have folded, especially after going down late. Never really felt like they panicked, always seemed confident. I like that.
- Last, we won’t see a lot of teams like PSU. I actually am somewhat happy with how well we broke the pressure, dealt with their quickness.
Solid win.
