finished:
7th nationally (first in Big Ten) in 3rd down conversions (49%).
3rd nationally in turnovers given (10)
4th nationally in time of possession.
I was a VERY vocal critic of the mess Jim rolled out on offense in 2017 and argued and still argue that the problems were way deeper than quarterback play. The design of the offense, from staff composition through play execution was brutal.
I also felt Jim would get it fixed and he did.
He rolled out an offense designed to compliment one of the better sets of experienced and talented personnel on D we'll ever see and to try to maximize its strengths.
The hand wringing over his style of offense is misplaced.
Had our defense been what he, Don Brown and we all expected it to be, we'd be preparing for a playoff game.
Next year he'll tweak again and roll out an offense designed to maximize his chances of winning big again - which will no doubt contain more quick strike components. I have a feeling its going to be fun to watch.
I believe that angst over the offense is misplaced.
I think the much bigger question that is looming coming out of the last two years is can Don Brown's defense be great at the precise moments and contexts they need to be great for us to win a championship.
Just one man's opinion.
