So Jim Harbaugh and family show up at Camp Michigania this past week. It was rather surreal to see him, his wife, and four of his kids spending time in semi-rustic accommodations, mingling regularly with the average Joe alums of UM and their families. A few bullet points of what it was like to be around him in a normal setting away from his crazy world in college football.

  • He is exactly as everyone describes. What you see is what you get. Really a regular guy. Pretty quirky. Very competitive and not afraid to talk about it or show it.
  • He did not seclude himself at all. He was all around the property, everyday, doing the same things with his wife and kids that all other families do.
  • He played in 4 or 5 camper vs. staff softball games and interacted with the guys and girls on both teams as if he was just one of the guys. Cheered people on and encouraged them. Led some camper cheers during a couple of the close games with staff members.
  • After giving a 45 minute speech in a sweatshirt and khakis, in the hot sun on Thursday morning, he then stood in that hot sun for another 45 minutes taking pictures, signing autographs, and having brief conversations with those who chose to stand in line.
  • Most people left him and his family alone and let them enjoy their vacation as they should have. A small sample of people seemed to not care what he may have been in the middle of as they approached him for a photo or autograph but that was clearly not the norm. For example, the last afternoon at the beach there was a water carnival. At least half of the camp attends. He and his family blended in, hung out at the beach, played all sorts of games and it did not appear one time as if anyone bothered them
  • Seeing him shoot archery with his kids, sing songs at a camp sing-a-long, eat breakfast, lunch and dinner with the other campers, among other things, and not seem fazed or uncomfortable really humanized a national celebrity.
  • He regularly approached people to engage in conversations.
  • His wife was incredibly friendly, approachable, engaging, and like Harbaugh, mingled naturally in all sorts of ways with the other campers.
Cool experience to be around someone that famous for a week straight, let alone the fact that it was UMs Football Coach. Very impressed with how he and his family, his wife in particular handled the week.

That's great stuff! Harbs is truly a man of the people and what you see IS what you get! I think this is why recruits and players love him. "Real recognize real".. Go Blue!
