As some of you may know, I spent the better part of 20 years in management consulting and in corporate exec roles. As part of those jobs, I had to write a lot of leadership assessments which provided strengths and weaknesses of high potential managers and even CEOs in some cases. Here is my at-a-distance Jim Harbaugh evaluation.

Strengths

Charismatic- players want to play for him and he attracts talent wherever he goes.

Integrity- unquestioned desire to follow the rules. Enstills off the field discipline and levies fair and swift punishment.

Respected professional- remains one of the most respected for what he does in coaching.

Turnaround guy- gets quick results and changes cultures quickly.

Weaknesses

Distracted- intellectual curiosity and diversity of interests can get the best of him. Loses focus on critical tasks and leaves them to others to pursue other interests at times.

Accountability- hires family and friends who may not necessarily be the best professionals available. Unclear whether there is accountability which can create issues among staff who are not among friends and family. Unclear whether performance standards are enforced or consistent.

Delegation- delegates key tasks to give staff freedom but may not intercede when performance does not meet standards.

Not a growth guy- he's the one to turn around the operation and keep the organization from failure. But unclear whether he is the leader for long term growth. Different Skillset and resume does not provide track record of long term growth to achieve "leadership in the industry."

Just another take on a Sunday morning. Jim's our guy. But expectations are going to be tempered unless he changes how he conducts himself and performs his job.
