Michigan head coach John Beilein is interviewing assistant coaches, and the list isn’t as long as some might believe.
Creighton assistant Preston Murphy has been interviewed, according to two sources. He joined the school in 2015 after spending one season as an assistant coach with Boston College, where he had previously been the program's director of operations from 2006-10.
Prior to his return to BC, Murphy spent four years at his alma mater, the University of Rhode Island. Murphy was an assistant coach with the Rams from 2010-14 before being promoted to the role of associate head coach in the spring of 2014.
His first coaching job came at Woonsocket High School in Rhode Island, where he was a head coach from 2003-06.
Word has it he will likely fill one slot unless Creighton ponies up to keep him, which is very possible.
Duquesne’s Charles Thomas is another who has interviewed. Thomas had an extensive professional playing career before moving into coaching, is heavily involved in recruiting and assists with all aspects of game preparation and on-court instruction.
Before Duquesne, Thomas was on the Akron staff after spending two seasons as an assistant head coach at Northwood University in Midland, Mich. He also spent one season as an assistant coach at Radford University (2006-07).
Before joining the coaching ranks, Thomas spent 15 years playing professionally in the U.S. and abroad. He is a 2000 graduate of Eastern Michigan, where he and twin brother Carl played for the Eagles from 1987-1991.
Former U-M standout and current commentator Tim McCormick has been mentioned, but he hasn’t been approached. Beilein’s son, Patrick — now head coach at Le Moyne — is a possibility, and we’ve mentioned Director of Ops and former Wolverine Chris Hunter. He doesn't need to interview, but he will receive consideration.
Watch for more on these developments in the days to come.
