Michigan class of 2021 point guard target Frankie Collins is set to decide tomorrow ... here's the latest on him, 2021 center Efton Reid and more.
Collins, Rivals.com's No. 69 senior nationally out of Henderson (Nev.) Coronado, narrowed his list to eight schools recently, but there had been rumblings Michigan moved to the top of his list when the Wolverines offered a few weeks back. Collins has played at three different schools in three years, but U-M has done its homework here before offering to make sure his transcripts were in order.
All signs point to Michigan.
"An athletic floor general who is a pure, pass-first guy, Collins will choose between his final eight of Arizona State, Auburn, Georgetown, Kansas, Michigan, New Mexico, USC and Vanderbilt," Rivals.com's Eric Bossi wrote. "Of his finalists, Michigan is the most recent offer and as he prepares to reveal his decision, I give Juwan Howard and the Wolverines the edge."
Bossi has been tight with the Collins camp, so this is just more solid confirmation.
Rumors have been swirling that Reid (7-1, 225, No. 24) could also be closing in on a decision. The former AAU teammate of Michigan freshmen Hunter Dickinson and Terrance Williams will play at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. this year ... we think. Our Clayton Sayfie confirmed with some close to Reid that it was very likely Reid would play this year rather than reclassify — yesterday, however, we got word that playing a delayed 2020 college season might still appeal to him.
"There's nothing right now (in terms of an impending commitment)," one close to it said. "There has been about about him going '20 still ... Michigan is out in front, but it's not done yet."
Reid has been incredibly tough to read the last few months. He doesn't talk much, and as Bossi said a few weeks back, his recruitment is "clear as mud."
U-M remains in the mix for five-stars Trevor Keels and Harrison Ingram ... of the two, Michigan seems to have a better shot at Ingram. They've told him they like him with the ball in his hands, like a point-forward, and he's been enamored with the idea.
Purdue and Stanford might still lead for the Dallas St. Mark's standout (Rivals.com no. 8 senior nationally), Rivals.com's Corey Evans said recently, but we agree with him that Michigan is making up ground quickly. Southern Assault AAU coach Vonzell Thomas said recently the recruitment remains "wide open."
"In the next couple of weeks he wants to study more about his final six," he said. "I think it will be who is going to put him in the best situation to allow him to be himself and play through mistakes. That's who is going to get him.
"With him being versatile and being able to do a lot on the floor as far as making everyone better and having the ball in his hands. A lot of people who know the game know what's important is having the ball in your hands late in the shot clock. That pretty much tells you who the coach trusts, and who his teammates trust. So he wants to be in that situation with the ball in his hands where he can create shots and plays for everybody."
Head coach Juwan Howard has proven to be a trustworthy coach for many recruits. Kids relate to him. We wouldn't put it past him to pull this one out.
As for Keels, a 6-4 shooting guard (No. 14) out of Fairfax, Va. Paul VI:
"Michigan is definitely still in it for Trevor Keels, but Duke and Villanova are the two to beat," Evans said. "Keels has said very little, at least publicly, about where things stand with his recruitment but it would come as a mild surprise if he did not pick the Blue Devils or Wildcats in the end. Michigan has remained in touch, as has North Carolina and Virginia, but it will not be easy to top Duke or Villanova. I wouldn't hold my breath if I was a Wolverine fan."
