Michigan picked up a bit of a surprise commitment from Washington D.C. St’ John’s College High three-star pro-style quarterback Kevin Doyle on Sunday evening. The 6-4, 210-pounder was in Ann Arbor for Michigan’s game against Air Force and quietly picked up an offer either during the visit or shortly thereafter.
The legitimate interest in Doyle began earlier this fall. Doyle and his high school team played against De La Salle from California a few weeks ago and once Jim Harbaugh and Pep Hamilton had a chance to watch Doyle play against competition like that they were sold. One of De La Salle’s coaches told Harbaugh and Co. that Doyle was the best quarterback he’d seen in person in a long time and that opinion also went a long way. Harbaugh and his assistants have a relationship with the coaches at De La Salle from recruiting tight end Devin Asiasi so the information is valued.
Doyle’s commitment did surprise many as he kept his offer under wraps. The three-star was originally planning to return to U-M for the Michigan State game and had that weekend in mind for a commitment but he decided not to wait. He’s a smart kid and wanted to make his decision now.
The Michigan staff had been planning to take two quarterbacks in 2018 and now they have them. The staff is still 100% sold on Joe Milton’s commitment and will likely continue to recruit Tyler Shough as well. How it all plays out is yet to be determined but don’t look at Doyle’s commitment as a sign of anything negative involving Milton.
