With less than two days before National Signing Day 2016, Michigan fans are dealing with drama like never before. In the weeks leading up to NSD, we've seen decommitments, commitments, flips, new official visits for top targets, and everything in between and as always, it's causing some folks who follow recruiting to freak out just a bit.
There are several prospects that are still undecided and still considering Michigan, but a couple of commits have made some waves in recent weeks.
Detroit Cass Tech offensive guard Michael Onwenu has been committed to Michigan since June 3 but he recently took an official visit to Michigan State, and that has a lot of people concerned. Even more recently, he removed "Michigan Commit" from his Twitter bio and now people are convinced that the four-star offensive lineman is bound for East Lansing. Not so fast.
TheWolverine.com recruiting editor Tim Sullivan has formed a solid relationship with Onwenu over the years and isn't worried.
"Based on what he’s told us throughout, it would be a surprise to see him end up elsewhere," Sullivan said. "However, he’s also the type of kid who tries to avoid attention - and he had to know that removing that info from his Twitter bio would bring plenty of questions. It would stun me if he didn't end up at Michigan."
At 6-3, 367 pounds, Onwenu is a gentle giant and doesn't like to be the center of attention but with the latest development in his recruitment, it at least looks like he's enjoying himself and having some fun with the process.
Final Prediction and Level of Confidence: Michigan - very high
Another prospect who has been committed to Michigan but was thought could possibly end up elsewhere, is Thompson's Station (Tenn.) Independence wide receiver Nate Johnson. After a recent in-home visit with Jim Harbaugh and Jedd Fisch, it seems all but guaranteed that Johnson will end up in Ann Arbor.
The 5-11, 174-pound three star committed to the Wolverines Dec. 12, but immediately said that he'd like to look around just a little bit more. He did just that, visiting Notre Dame and Miami in the month of January, but come Wednesday, we fully expect him to sign his letter of intent and fax it to Schembechler Hall.
