The latest on Michigan’s assistant coach shake-ups, some potential transfers to watch and more …
Starting with the obvious first …
As we reported Jan. 4 ... we said Dan Enos “is likely to be wide receivers coach (we'd previously heard RBs) with a line on OC down the road (maybe sooner than later). We've heard passing game coordinator Pep Hamilton actually has an NFL job offer, and he's expected to take it.”
In Michigan’s recent release announcing Enos’ official hire, the university reported that he was hired to fill “an offensive position” to be determined. That insinuates moving parts … or, waiting to announce what happens with Hamilton. Those closest to head coach Jim Harbaugh have long said he doesn’t fire anybody. He just doesn’t renew contracts, as we saw with Kevin Tolbert (strength coach). As reported, former Wisconsin/Arkansas strength coach Ben Herbert has filled that role.
We don’t know how Enos, a former O.C. at Arkansas, feels about working under Hamilton or anyone else, but we do believe (strongly) that he took the job believing Hamilton was likely to be coaching elsewhere.
We’ve also got people close to it who said both Hamilton and offensive coordinator Tim Drevno would be back, but potentially in different capacities. Good sources (including some from our own totchman on the board, whose source on this is very good) seemed to think so … but we believe (strongly) that Hamilton is leaving.
Harbaugh doesn’t share a lot of sensitive information with anyone outside his inner circle. There is going to be misinformation out there, which is why what’s next is so hard to predict (that and, again, the fact that he generally hasn’t fired people). We do know Hamilton is being courted to be QB coach for Jon Gruden with the Raiders, which falls in line with what we said last week about him having an offer. Scott Turner, an offensive analyst, will join the Panthers staff, ESPN’s David Newton reported Tuesday,
We also reported that Al Washington, who we’ve heard very good things about as a recruiter, would be hired, and he’s officially been added to the staff as linebackers coach and special teams assistant. Chris Partridge had been coaching linebackers, of course … though there’s been some angst about him potentially leaving, those close to it believe he stays and coaches safeties and gets a raise (and possibly a title) and continues to coach special teams, as well.
Devin Bush Sr., a defensive analyst, coached the safeties in the bowl game after Brian Smith left to take the D.C. position at Rice. We are hearing they are working on a way to keep him (and keep him happy). They like him.
We don’t know what to expect when it comes to the running game and play calling as Drevno is concerned. There’s been conflicting information on that, but we believe he will be on staff next year in some capacity. He signed a five-year contract in the offseason. It wouldn’t surprise to see him coach the entire offensive line now that Greg Frey has left for Florida State.
There have been different names bandied about as the 10th coach. Some have insinuated former offensive lineman Chris Bryant, on staff now, could be added, with his emphasis on recruiting. CMU recruiting coordinator/tight ends coach/assistant head coach Sherrone Moore followed Jim and Jay Harbaugh on twitter recently … he’s an up and comer and was recently named to the Named to the 35 under 35 at the AFCA last week.
Just in: we expect him Moore join the staff.
We know from several different sources that Harbaugh was interested in former Wolverine Mike Hart, now RBs coach at Indiana, but it was not reciprocated. Hart is happy at IU.
On the current team, there have been reports on twitter that running back Kareem Walker would no longer be with the team. We broke the news that both Walker and tackle Juwann Bushell-Beatty would not play in the Outback Bowl … those close to it said at the time, “Walker may not be back. This is his fourth strike.”
As always, we wait for the coaching staff to confirm these things and generally only comment on dismissals, etc., if there are reports (like the one that surfaced yesterday). So … that’s what we know, and — as always — we hope for the best for the kid.
As one of our subscribers reported today, 2018 quarterback Kevin Doyle ... they'd like him to prep a year. This has been in the works for quite some time, but it's apparently something he's agreeable to.
Finally, Michigan coaches have started following Rice grad transfer tackle Calvin Anderson on twitter, and as we’ve said, we know they are actively pursuing grad transfer tackles this offseason. Anderson was honorable mention All-Conference USA, but some believe he’s a pro. Texas is all over him, but the Wolverines are kicking the tires.
There are others, as well. We will try to provide more in tomorrow’s ITF.
