Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh continues to work on replacing Maurice Linguist, now the head coach at Buffalo. Here’s the latest …

As reported yesterday, Steve Clinkscale is far and away the frontrunner here, but they aren’t going to pin all their hopes on one guy. Clinkscale is liked by the majority of the recruits (loved by Myles Pollard), but he is “no guarantee” and has a good thing going at Kentucky.

Also noted yesterday, New Orleans assistant DB coach Cory Robinson is No. 2 on the list. This appears to be one new D.C. Mike Macdonald is familiar with and has some ties to, so they believe he’d be willing to make the move (even though he likes the NFL).

Interestingly, our E.J. Holland brought up Chris Hawkins at Arizona State recently, and that seems to be picking up some steam. Some of the big-time pledges absolutely love him, and while he’s only 26 years old, he’s an outstanding recruiter.

The caveat here — do they really need another guy with West Coast ties? They feel they already have two in new recruiting coordinator Courtney Morgan and defensive line coach Shaun Nua. Plus, and again, Hawkins is only 26 years old.

He is definitely interested in the job, from what we’ve gathered, and they’re going to do some more homework on him.

Finally, someone brought up former Michigan linebacker Roy Manning yesterday ... and we have confirmed he's on the list. He’s now at Oklahoma and loves it there, but he got his coaching start at U-M as a graduate assistant under Brady Hoke and has moved up the ranks. He coaches the Sooners’ cornerbacks and is very well respected there, also a very good recruiter.

Manning still loves his alma mater, and the pull might be enough to bring him back, especially if guys like former teammates Mike Hart and Ron Bellamy work on him.

Again, though, they want Clinkscale, and they’re working hard to land him.

Watch for more on these developments in the days to come.
