The submarine has submerged, and the Wolverines have yet to put on pads, but there's still some information to share.
Those who have seen it up close feel really good about the direction of the offense compared to where things were at the end of spring. One's opinion ... the wide receivers more than held their own against the outstanding secondary in 7-on-7s, and there's some depth there beyond the big two of Tarik Black and Donovan Peoples-Jones. Oliver Martin and Nico Collins are going to be a big part of the success, but as senior safety Tyree Kinnel said at Big Ten Media Day, don't forget about Grant Perry.
"He's the toughest cover (for me)," he said, predicting a breakout year beyond the 300-plus he put up last year.
Perry had the impressive catch of early practice yesterday, according to observers, and is ready to go.
It's too early to say what's going to happen on the offensive line, but the conditioning is off the charts ... not just for the line, either, but those guys took their summer workouts seriously. You'll see what we mean when these guys start coming in for interviews this week.
The offense has looked better — and different. There's a lot of work to do, of course, but expect much more out of the shotgun (fitting projected starter Shea Patterson's strengths), the run/pass option (RPO) that's been hinted at for much of the year and getting players in space to make plays.
One source indicated that with the new redshirt rules, they hope to get all four quarterbacks (Patterson, Brandon Peters, Dylan McCaffrey and Joe Milton) snaps in some of the 'easier' games if they can create some distance.
The defense should allow them to do that. The depth is flat out nuts, and the speed is off the charts. Defensive coordinator Don Brown wasn't blowing smoke when he said he expected this to be his fastest defense ever.
Another extremely close to it said Milton "has the skills to pay the bills." He's going to be fun to watch in the years to come. All four quarterbacks and even transfer Jeff George Jr. have thrown the ball well in the early going.
A few players were thrown out of practice yesterday, we hear, after a scuffle. They're getting after it.
Keep in mind that it's early and the pads haven't gone on yet, but those trained to see things are impressed so far. Take it with a grain of salt (grade of slaw) if you so choose.
