Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh is in California with his family, but the wheels remain in motion heading toward the 2021 campaign.

From what we picked up tonight (albeit from a second-hand source, it's one very close to it), the Jim Harbaugh extension is done and "going through legal." So yes, he's expected back next year. We don't know the details, but this is the word being given to players, recruits and their families, etc.

Defensive coordinator Don Brown has been dismissed, as we've reported. We recently said Derek Mason, Harbaugh's former assistant at Stanford and the former Vanderbilt head coach, was not as likely due to his desire to be a head coach again. We can say now that he's once again being talked about as a serious candidate.

As noted over the weekend, it will be up to the new coordinator to determine which position coaches stay and who goes. We know Tim Banks, co-DC at Penn State, is another serious candidate on defense.

As for the offense, we said last week Jim Harbaugh plans to coach quarterbacks and that Jay Harbaugh would be special teams only. That seems to be the case. Tight ends coach Sherrone Moore, offensive coordinator Josh Gattis and line coach Ed Warinner are the three still currently doing offensive work in the building. We strongly believe Moore has an offer from Oklahoma to join the Sooners staff, but we believe he wants to stay and probably will if they sweeten the pot a bit.

We still believe Jay Harbaugh will be back as special teams coach.

Finally, the rumors about the pursuit of Oregon offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead to join the staff as an O.C. above Gattis seems to be legit. That's the word among several of the recruits and others, and while we don't know how far it's gotten, we believe this has legs.

Watch for more on these developments in the days to come ...
