I've gone ahead and put in a new FutureCast pick for new 2022 quarterback offer Jayden Denegal, who made an unofficial visit today and earned a scholarship from the Wolverines after throwing for Jim Harbaugh and Matt Weiss. Denegal's trainer and mentor is California quarterback guru Danny Hernandez, who Iv'e known for several years. I caught up with Danny to get more on Denegal. Here are some highlights from the interview.
On overall thoughts on Denegal:
"Jayden is a super sharp kid. He's a big kid. He's a prototype NFL guy. He has a big arm. He's highly intelligent and a great student in the classroom. He's smart on the football field as well. He had some big offers early on. This is a weird offseason with COVID. He had a successful season. He played in a rogue spring league and went undefeated. Once they started playing in California, he led his team to an undefeated season as well."
On what he's working on with Denegal:
"He played this last season too heavy. He played at 227. At that weight, he lost his twitch and explosion. We've focused on slimming down. He's at 213 right now. His body looks good. His throws are cleaner. This offseason, a big focus will be getting more twitchy and sudden. He has a big arm and is smart, so we're trying to add athleticism while staying mechanically sound. That's the goal."
On what the Michigan offer means for his recruitment:
"It's huge. That's something we feel really good about. They will 100 percent be in the mix for his decision. Michigan will probably be at the top of the list, to be honest. He also threw for Michigan State yesterday. They really like him, but they are waiting on some other guys, including my guy Katin Houser. Michigan is a good one for Jayden. He threw for UCLA recently. They didn't offer him, but they like him. But he's the kind of guy that's not looking to collect offers. It's late in the game. He's going to highly consider making a commitment to Michigan if it's at the top of his list."
On how Denegal would fit at Michigan:
"He would be a great fit. I have a good relationship with (Josh) Gattis. We're working on building a relationship with Coach (Matt) Weiss. He's coming in from the NFL, and like I said earlier, Jayden has that prototype body. I think they'll help Jayden prepare for the next level."
