Is a contract just perception?

The fact that Jim, or any other coach would have one year or three years remaining on their contract does it really matter? These contracts are broken routinely and it seems the only thing they define is compensation and the golden handcuffs.

Charlie Weiss had contracts from Notre Dame and Kansas but it didn't stop them from firing him. Hoke and Rodriguez had contracts that we had to pay buyouts on. Auburn supposedly is paying $21 million for their divorce. It seems the only contract worth a damn may be Tom Allen with a reported $27 million buyout. Golden handcuffs.

Harbaugh has a better selling point to coaches and recruits than a signed contract: I am at my alma mater in a town I love with my parents living on the same street as me. Keep in mind, Bo didn't have a contract until he flirted with Texas A&M while all other coaches did.

Perhaps the contract is just being overblown as they really have minimal impact on determining the longevity in coaching (ask Don Brown).
