Because 'somebody' has called that fricking play 11 times this year. Not only has it not succeeded, the ball and receiver haven't even been in the same zip code yet. It has looked clownishly inept.
On Saturday, we went smartly down the field deep into the Red Zone. We had Sparty on his heels with quick hitters and passes. Then, inexplicably, we broke tempo and hauled out that atrocity, not once but twice. Dantonio must have gone to his knees in gratitude. If that wasn't bad enough, the second pass was intended for Eddie McDoom. What?!?
I've long been under the impression that play gets called when you have tough, sure-handed sky pilots who can, when necessary, out-battle the DB for the ball. Is that Eddie McDoom? Lord, he's a whippet who hasn't even showed he's a reliable, game-proven receiver yet.
And this is something that has been quietly chewing at me-- Harbaugh's "interchangeable parts" concept. I think we all understand, skill players do NOT all possess the same level of skill for any given play. Which is probably why nobody can ever remember Dev Smith getting to the corner on a pitch, let alone turning it.
When we're looking at a 3rd down that means the difference between 3 and 7 points, shouldn't somebody care what personnel are on the field?
Next rant: Let's have a moratorium on returners ever leaving the end zone.
