Was that inevitably the losing play? Yes. But we absolutely have opportunities to put that game away. I think today we really saw how average (below average) Rudock is as a quarterback. His throws beyond about 15 yards are were off target and wounded ducks. That throw that Chesson dropped for a first down absolutely was a floater, wobbly pass. He again missed Chesson on a deep throw that was 100% a touchdown if he connects. Without a passing threat, good teams are going to pack the box and eliminate the run as we saw today. Turn a couple of those FGs into TDs and we are never in that position.
Additionally, while the offensive line is certainly playing better than last year, they sill are not getting any significant push up front to get our run game going.
The defense I thought played well, minus that botched play to the FB which really hurt us. Connor Cook is really good and I can only imagine what the game would have been like if we had a quarterback anywhere near his caliber.
I try to keep things in perspective. This was a 5-7 team last year. I still feel like we have a lot of players on the team who just don't know how to win; and how can you blame them? We haven't even been competitive against MSU in the last few years, but should've beat them yesterday. We are playing with all the same players and a VERY average quarterback. There is still a real possibility that we win the next 4 games before playing Ohio State. That puts at 9-2 heading into the last week. Who would have thought that?!
The effects of TWO bad coaching hires and 7+ years of awful football will not be erased in 1 season. It's only a matter of time though.
Proud of the way this team has competed this season. I'm confident JH will keep these guys hungry!
GO BLUE!
