Why would you stay? You are now in Year 6 and by all means you have regressed a lot the past 2 seasons and you are not getting anywhere close the success necessary. If you re-sign, you would have to take a pay-cut potentially - why do that? Even if you take a pay-cut it's not like expectations of you will become lower. Let's face it, if JH was making $1M/year we still would expect him to win a championship annually, so why take a pay cut. Was told that his family may move for the winter so JH can focus on football, etc and I am sure it's not easy for his family given all the scrutiny he is under.
JH's stock in the NFL is still pretty good - Jim would get any of the 10 openings that will likely happen this year to get back into the NFL. The Jets would hire him in a hurry if he pursued that. If Jim stays at Michigan with a pay-cut let's say for another 2 years and fails to beat OSU (highly likely) or sits at 7-8 wins, etc his football career as a HC in a prominent position is likely over. There very well may be a world where he rides off into the sunset and retires but Jim just does not come across as that type of person. Jim has been given ALL the resources he has asked for at Michigan, so not sure what "trick up his sleeve" he is going to use to turn things around dramatically and be able to beat OSU. The harsh reality is that if we go 10-3 each season the next 2 seasons but lose both games to OSU, he still will lose his job and that's the ridiculous expectations that come with coaching at Michigan.
No idea what is going through his head, but I would be least bit surprised if some of the "Jim to the NFL" rumors are indeed true and he does act on that. Either way, wherever he goes - Michigan or some place else I hope the man is incredibly successful because despite how strange he is, he represents Michigan and our brand incredibly well and with integrity. Go blue!
