Consolidate power conferences down from 5 to 4. Regulate the schedules to make sure each conference has same amount of non-conference games and similar level opponents for non conference games.

Reduce the number of non power 5 conferences... maybe 2 in total? No more than 4. In total there will be significantly fewer D1 teams but the competition amongst non-power 4 teams will be much more balanced.

Each year the power 4 conferences can do a crossover similar to the BIG ACC challenge, but rotating conferences from year to year for dynamic matchups. Same with the non-power 4 conference teams. The best teams in the non-power conferences can at least benefit from some high profile games each year.

Because the conference champs gets an auto berth, if a power 4 team loses a non-conference game it’s not the end of the season. NO set schedules for non conference games, similar to BIG ACC challenge to try and match teams for equal competition level... give the UCFs and Boise’s of the world their shot with a decent schedule.

8 team playoff with 4 conference champ automatic berths. 4 at large spots for the most deserving and a non-power 4 team if warranted. The at large berths will always create drama but no way around that.
