There was a time where I was enamored with his talent. Thought he could be as high as the top pick...but not anymore.

Leave off the talent or the drops. Why don't you want to draft this guy...he isn't a physical player. He doesn't want to play hard nosed football. Belichick would never draft him. You can intimidate Funchess over the middle. Funchess would be a phenomenal flag football guy.

I was amazed at how much of a finesse player he is at UM. Just my .02 cts. I wish him well wouldn't draft him until the 3rd round...maybe late 2nd.

Thoughts?

EVERYONE uses this comparison, but Funchess = Kelvin Benjamin

Benjamin, as anyone who watched any Carolina Panthers this past season knows --- there sure is a role for him in the NFL. Benjamin was well-worth his late 1st-round draft pick.

Funchess, likewise. I'd draft him as early as #24 or so, absolutely.

I get what the OP is saying and wouldn't entirely disagree, but I wouId also want to keep in mind the context of how terrible we were overall during Funchess' tenure at UM. No solid QB play, no other receivers to draw attention away from him, no running game. Just no balance or much positive momentum for a quality player to be a part in the larger system of success. It was all funky. It will be interesting to see how he does in the NFL on a quality team.

IMO from what I've seen of Benjamin, he's less athletic, but a lot tougher than Devin. Funchess is stupid athletic, and made some insane catches, but he also had a lot of concentration lapses, and he hears footsteps when he goes through the middle. We started him at TE but moved him to WR essentially because he was a horrendous blocker. He's a great weapon if all he had to do was run down the field and catch jump balls, but he's going to be asked to do more than that, and I'm not so sure he'll be able to.

For some reason Funchess is highly regarded by outsiders. I think it has to do with his measurables.
Those of us that have seen him more frequently over the past 3 years know he's not a great football player.
I wouldn't draft the kid period, let alone in the first or second round.

I agree that there are questions about Funchess's motor, particularly due to some of the things we saw this year. But I do agree with one of the posters above that he really was in a crappy situation. He didn't have a QB that was very good at throwing the ball, there were no other top notch receivers that the defense had to account for, and our running game was not strong the past two seasons. Funchess obviously got frustrated and it showed in his play which doesn't say much for his character but on a better team he might have ended up first team all-american. He certainly has NFL talent but we will see if he has a NFL head.

Gardner threw for record yards 2 years ago - what is this nonsense about no QB? Funchess did not play hard. Yes Gardner was horrible last year but Funchess dropped so many easy balls. A good WR keeps his head in the game regardless of what else is going on around him. I personally don't see him being a Pro Bowler - he'll do well in the NFL but he will need to mature.
