I thought this was odd

Watching the LSU V Ark game while drinking my java. During the last drive, with LSU up by 7 and about 2 min left to play, the LSU RB breaks away for a seemingly easy TD, but slides just inside the 5 to run the game clock out. Victory formation right? Not so fast! They line up again and give the ball to the RB again, who pulls up again at the 1/2 yrd line. They try one more time to no avail, time runs out. Game over.
Now why is this significant? The line was 13.5. Were the coaches intentionally trying to cover? I don't think I've ever witnessed a series of events like that.
I just thought that was interesting.
