Given all the talk about Gary’s performance I decided to go back and focus on Gary every single play and see what I could gather. A couple caveats before I begin. The camerawork was bad for this game. The angle was so far away that at times it was hard to tell who was who, and they also cut to multiple plays that were already in progress so I didn’t catch the whole play. I am not in any way a coach, scout or anyone associated with the game of football so this is an admittedly amateurish analysis.
1st half
1st and 10 – Unblocked and chases the screen, ball thrown back over his head to the QB. Loafs a bit on chasing down the play.
1st and 10 – Single blocked. Rushes upfield but QB steps up in the pocket and scrambles. Again loafs after the play
1st and 10 – Chipped by RB out of the- backfield. Quick pass to the opposite side of the field doesn’t give him the chance to do much.
2nd and 9 – Matched up 1 on 1 with a TE, beats him to the inside and forces an early throw along with Bush and Winovich
3rd and 9 – Lined up over RG, RG lets him through untouched but it is a screen pass so it was intentional. Pressure along with 3 other Wolverines forces a bad pass that Bush tips.
1st and 10 – Blocked one on one by the RG, sealed away from the running play
2nd and 7 – Lined up wide of the RT, beats the RT upfield and forces QB to step up into the pocket and get hit by Bush who forces an incompletion
3rd and 12 – Lines up wide of the RT, single blocking. Rushes wide upfield and gets around the RT but pass is out well before Gary gets there. Cut block penalty backs them up 15 yards
3rd and 28 – Single blocked by the RT, beats him inside to make a tackle on the running play after 2 yards.
3rd and 4 – Kemp replaced Gary for first two plays of drive. 1 on 1 with RT. Rushes wide upfield again and QB gets ball out well before Gary gets there
1st and 10 – 1 on 1 with the C who blocks Gary well enough but this is a slow developing flea flicker which allows Gary to clean up the sack after Bush gets to the QB first
2nd and 14 – 1 on 1 with the LT. Takes a very wide rush path to the outside. QB steps up and scrambles through the lane between Gary and Solomon
3rd and 7 – Lines up outside of the TE. RT picks him up and as he rushes outside he gets chipped by the RB coming out of the backfield. Might have forced the QB to step up if he hadn’t been chipped.
1st and 10 – Lined up over RT. Rushes wide and is chipped by RB out of the backfield
1st and 10 – First true double of the day as the RT and TE wall him off and QB scrambles to his side of the field
1st and 10 – Replaced by Kemp for 2 previous plays. Lined up over RG. Makes a move to the outside and is chipped by the RB. Beats the blocking but I think this is intentional by Purdue as this is a throwback screen to the other side of the field for a TD.
1st and 10 – Lined up wide of the LT. Unblocked as this is another attempted screen but the receiver is covered and QB throws it into the ground
2nd and 10 – Lined up over the RG. Attempts to make a move to the inside but collides with the RT who whiffed on a block on Bush and falls down. Pass is completed to the TE and Gary loafs after the play. TE breaks Kinnel tackle and gains extra yards
1st and 10 – Lined up over LT. LT takes Furbush blitzing inside and pulling RG meets Gary. Gary makes a move outside but ball is long gone before Gary gets close
2nd and 10 – 1 on 1 with TE who cut blocks Gary and slows him enough for the play to go to the right away from him. Loafs on the play
3rd and 6 – Lined up wide outside the TE. Rushing play to the right and he gets around the LT to join in on a tackle around the line of scrimmage.
1st and 10 – Lined up wide of the TE. Rushes outside and is picked up by both RBs, one of which gets called for a cut block on Gary
1st and 25 – Unblocked coming off the line, picked up by a RB who he easily discards and pressures the QB into a bad throw
2nd and 25 – Unblocked again as this is a quick WR screen to the outside. Gary jumps at the ball. Doesn’t touch the ball but may have forced an errant throw.
3rd and 25 – 1 on 1 with RT. Makes a move inside but is slowed up by Hurst who is on the ground in front of him. Ball is out very quickly on a WR screen that Bush blew up so Gary wouldn’t have made it to the QB anyway.
1st and 10 – Lined up very wide, almost outside of the trips that Purdue has to the left of the formation. WRs ignore Gary, who goes around the edge and is able to hit the RB at the line along with Hurst for a stop.
1st and 10 – Lined up wide of the TE to the left. 1 on 1 with the TE who gives Gary a little chip which is more than enough as the the QB immediately rolls to the right side of the field
2nd and 10 – Lined up outside the TE to the right side. Unblocked as the play is run to the left
3rd and 6 – 1 on 1 with the RT. Rushes wide outside and forces the QB to step up in the pocket where he is hit by Hurst
2nd Half
1st and 10 – Chipped by the LG and then walled off by the C and RG.
2nd and 12 – Late cutting to the action so hard to tell but looks like Gary is doubled by RT and TE and taken out of the play
3rd and 9 – 1 on 1 with RT. Makes a move inside where he runs into a mass of bodies, allowing Bush to loop around to the outside and pressure the QB into a bad throw
1st and 10 – Lined up over the RT. RG picks him up as he rushes inside. Drives the RG back a bit but not enough to affect the play.
2nd and 10 – Matched up with the RT and chipped by the TE. Beats the blocking and eventually gets to the QB who is already being sacked by Bush and Winovich
3rd and 21 – Lined up over the LT. Draw play to the right side away from Gary. Loafs after the play
1st and 10 – Lined up wide of the RT. Looks like he made a move inside and was cut by the RG and taken out of the play. Hard to tell due to camera cutting away
2nd and 6 – Matched up with RT and chipped by the TE. QB fumbles the ball and loses 12 yards.
3rd and 18 – Lined up over the LG. Does a slow moving and really wide stunt with Hurst that takes him completely out of the play but allows Hurst to get a hit on the QB.
1st and 10 – Lined up over LT. Makes moves inside and cut block by LG who takes him out of the play
2nd and 10 – Lined up over RG. Cuts through a gap between RG and C but again this is likely by design as Purdue is throwing a screen pass behind him
3rd and 5 – Lined up over the RT. Twists to the inside and is easily picked up by the RG
1st and 10 – Lined up over RT. 1 on 1 with the RT who handles him
2nd and 10 – Lined up as a DT over the RG. Get stoned by the RG, the C is there to help as well but not needed. Hurst creates immediate pressure but QB gets rid of the ball very quickly.
1st and 10 – Lined up to the right side of the formation. 1 on 1 with the TE. Sheds that block but the QB has already rolled to the right and away from the pressure.
2nd and 10 – Lined up wide to the right. Wide rush is picked up by the RT and QB gets rid of ball quickly
3rd and 10 – 1 on 1 with the RT. Pushes him back a bit but doesn’t matter as Winovich is in the backfield immediately for the sack.
Summary
- The idea that Gary is being double and triple teamed all the time was not supported by the tape at all. I have Gary for 46 total snaps, which break down as follows..
Unblocked - 5
Single blocked – 30
Chipped Double – 7
True Double – 3
Triple - 1
- Gary has a tendency to line up very wide and then rush very wide. Often times he beats the man he is lined up against but is too far up the field and unable to impact the play. His wide rushes also open up big lanes for QBs to step up and scramble. Not sure how much of this is by design but it is a noticeable difference from Taco Charlton who was able to provide a rush while also collapsing the pocket.
- Gary has a tendency to loaf after the plays that go away from him. It is very noticeable in comparison to Hurst and Winovich, who almost always chase the play down.
- Purdue did seem to use misdirection and play design to avoid Gary on a lot of plays. Often the QB would be on a designed rollout so even if Gary beat his man he would have no shot on a play.
- All in all I think some of the criticism of Gary is warranted, based on the lofty expectations. I expected to watch this tape and see Gary making a major impact doing the dirty work but overall was underwhelmed by his play in this particular game.
