I was with a friend of mine that was a huge FSU guy. Bowden was in his prime and FSU was kicking butt and taking turf from stadiums where they had won to plant in their turf graveyard. Ughh.
We were coming off an 8-4 season and Lloyd hadn't shown much as a head coach. My friend said to me, "no offense Jim but, Michigan has as much chance of winning the NC as I do winning the Olympic 100 meter dash." Man, that really ticked me off. Alas, I had no defense. We had looked pretty pedestrian the year before and I was just hoping we would be better.
If memory serves me correctly, we're playing CO at our place. The two previous games with CO had been close coming down to the last play. This year was different. We destroyed them That game just had a different feel. They never let up the entire season and we ended up beating WSU for our first and only NC in my lifetime.
Why do I bring this up? Well, there was a nice thread within a thread about CO hail mary game earlier. While that was one of my top 3 all-time miserable Michigan moments, This is the CO game I choose to remember. It happened during a year when no one expected anything out of us. It's the reason I get excited every year. You just never know when your gonna catch lightning in a bottle. Maybe finally our fortunes will begin to change.
Oddly enough, My buddy doesn't recall the conversation. I do.
