A few years ago, one of my best friends in the world died of liver cancer. He loved baseball, and his son was pretty good at it. His son, Kerry, was a late bloomer and was just starting to develop when Ken got sick. Kerry went from high school to Ju-co, to Va Tech, to being drafted by the Tigers in rapid succession. He was finishing at Va Tech and had just been drafted by the Tigers when Ken passed.
Covid put a damper on the start of his career, but when he started, he started with the AA Erie Seawolves. That's where he was last year, and he had a nice season there. Not spectacular, but good.
He busted his butt all off-season traveling around the country getting the best fitness and batting advice he could get. This year he started in Erie, and his hard work has paid off. He has been leading or near the top of all minor league players in home runs and is batting over 300.
On Friday, while his sister and mom were up for the weekend, he was called up to the AAA Mud Hens. In his first at-bat, he hit a double, and on trip number two to the plate, he jacked a two-run homer.
I'm so happy for this young man; I'm just sorry his dad isn't here to witness what's happening.
He's worth pulling for, he's just a great guy.
I'm attaching a link to his stat page and a link to a podcast he did on Father's day that's affiliated with the Tigers. He comes on at about the 25-minute mark. It's worth a listen.
Take your mind off recruiting for a minute and check him out.
