I'm pretty positive JH didn't want to reveal the the formation that Higdon scored on in the fourth quarter. I'm pretty sure he didn't want to show the wrinkle that Shea got the first down out of the same formation on either, but he had to show both because at that point in the game it was all about getting the win. Why did he have to show it? Because the O-line showed again that they can't consistently man up and drive block people into submission.
Honestly, other than the bonehead series when Mason was not on the field in the red zone I didn't have a lot of issues with the play calling. I do have an issue with not deferring to the second half but I think Jim is trying to send a message to the offensive unit that he has confidence in the them. Sadly, they just aren't there yet.
I believe JH is trying to give the O-line every opportunity to toughen up before Wisky. Clearly he's trying to will them to get better. Yes the run on first down was predictable but Harbaugh knows he has to find yards on the ground in the bigger games and one of the things he always says is, "you get better at football by playing football."
The truth is, they're getting a little better each week but I don't think they will be good enough in two weeks to consistently run against the Wisky front. Still, there are going to be spots where we need them make plays in the ground game. I think next week we'll see a fair amount of the same kind of play calling and Jim will only be opening up the playook only if he has too. Right now everything is trending toward preparing for the big games down the road no matter what cliche we hear at the Monday press conference.
