In a true (not lip-service) meritocracy only one player per starting position deserves to be a starter, and that is the guy who earns the job. Best players play, period. There is no room for sentimental favorites. Seniority has zero influence. The only guarantee for anyone on the roster is the opportunity to compete for playing time.
This year I find myself in a sit back and see what unfolds mindset -- more so than any other year I can remember. I don't have any favorites at any position. My favorite player anywhere on the field is the one who earns playing time and does the most with it. I will be cheering equally hard for all of them.
All coaches preach accountability and earning playing time. Some practice those notions more than others. The most successful coaches practice it the most diligently. This staff needs to practice it 100% -- and I think they will.
