I am a senior partner at one of the largest law firms in the world and recently had to decide to "let go" a young associate a few years out of law school. The associate had graduated high in his class from one of the top law schools in the country and basically reminded me of that when our decision was communicated to him. My response was that his performance as a lawyer did not match the promise we saw in him based on his law school performance. In fact, he was quite bad, and no partners or senior partners wanted to work with him anymore, after trying very hard to make him "get it." I am not in any way suggesting that UM should replace Harbaugh--I personally am not thinking along those lines and agree that Harbaugh needs more time.
