Watching the semifinal matchup between OSU and Clemson, it was so apparent to me what needs to be done in order to beat them.
Just like the past couple games between Michigan and them, Clemson was unable to generate pressure organically against Fields. The Buckeye OL was stellar even when patching players in and out due to injuries. Sure Fields got smacked around when he scrambled and the blitz made it home a time or two, but for the most part, Fields was able to stand in the pocket and survey the route trees without concern of being hit. Also, The Buckeyes were rushing the ball with impunity. The KEY to beating The Buckeyes is a superior DL!
We have to accept that OSU is going to score points. It is just a fact. Limiting their opportunities, making them earn and pay for it is the recipe! Yes, Michigan has to score when they get the ball too, but The Buckeyes have been able to score without opposition against Michigan and last night against Clemson. The DL proved ineffective and just got manhandled.
I know some will argue that Clemson's secondary got ate up, but that is in large part because Fields had all the time in the world. It was the same against Michigan. If you can stop the run and pressure the QB this leads to disrupting the timing.
This is why I am for replacing Shaun Nua! He has failed in talent development and in acquisition. Whoever Harbs chooses to hire to compliment Banks, if he is indeed going to a collaborative system, it needs to be a guy with a proven track record for DL success.
That is the pathway to victory against The Buckeyes!
