From my standpoint, our defense last year was analogous to a pitcher with a 101 mph fastball. Mowed over most but got hit hard when good opponents adjusted and knew it was coming.
For this D I believe zone can be the nasty off-speed pitch that just creates havoc for opponents and makes the fastball that much more effective.
With straight man, good OCs with talent will get exactly the match-ups they want then it's just best man wins (and a safety on a slot or a LB on a fast RB out wide usually favors the offense.)
Then you have the issue of running QBs scrambling.
Hopefully we sprinkle some in.
