A History Lesson on Coaching Searches - Rolling the Dice

Data: The AVERAGE Tenure of a college head coach is 4.95 years, but the MEDIAN tenure is 3.0 years.

In recent years, smart, conscientious Athletic Directors at Michigan did extensive coaching searches for a new head coach
They enlisted consultants, they talked to dozens of contacts, coaches, mentors, AD's, references. They did background checks.

After exhaustive searches hey found three outstanding coaches with pedigree, credential, great interviews, said they all the right things. PERFECT
They found

  1. Rich Rodriguez (Winning % @ UM = 40%),
  2. Brady Hoke (61%)
  3. Jim Harbaugh (69%)

High Fives
And each time after the initial press conferences AD's, Media, and Fans declared each one of them to be a GREAT HIRE.
Lots of high fives, and congratulations were shared. optimism on the board was uncontainable.

On day one, each of these great coaches seemed sure to become a great coach, perhaps a legendary coach at Michigan

Then the honeymoon ended.

Are you ready to Roll the Dice again?
