1st victory at PSU...I have some questions for you.

1. Do you think this is a good idea? I understand why PSU is doing it...trying to re-legitimize Paterno and appease the diehards. Personally I think it's a mistake since it just keeps reinforcing that the PSU is in denial of the Paterno culpability of allowing Sandusky to rape kids.

2. How would you proceed with the Paterno issue? Would you wait until everything has been settled and released? Would you honor Paterno regardless of national sentiment? Personally...I think all this stuff just puts PSU in a negative national light although satisfies the hardliners.

Penn State fans are schizophrenic. On the one hand, they want to fight the "false narrative" and prove that Paterno didn't know anything about Sandusky, or even that pedophiles existed. Then, when something like this comes up, they say they don't care what the world thinks, and that they should just honor Paterno, put the statue back up, rename the stadium, etc., without regard to what anybody else thinks.

What they don't really get is this: There is no point to honoring Paterno if the general public thinks he was a pedophile enabler. And that's just what people outside of Happy Valley will always think, because it's the truth.

HAA! Just look at the headlines on Google News and you will see how unwise Penn State's plans are. They are getting crushed nationally over this.

I think the people running Penn State know that Joe was a bad guy, but their customers are demanding constant reaffirmation. I don't know why anybody would want to be in a leadership position at that school right now. The JoeBots have made the atmosphere positively toxic.

The funny thing about this --- nobody at this point even knows exactly what this "commemoration" is going to entail.

I think it's going to be something fairly low-key, and something that nobody would have batted an eye at, had it been done without any advance warning.

I'd expect something like inviting Paterno's former players on the field between the 1st and 2nd quarters (the PSU football alumni are already in town for some other event that weekend), with a mention that September 17 is the exact 50-year anniversary of Paterno's 1st game as Head Coach.

If it's the above, that's no big deal to me.

Guess we'll see in 15 days. All yesterday really did was give the "Penn State is a cult" folk 15 days to give their "hot takes" and gather their outrage.

I would definitely agree with that assertion. Low key. Mention it. Honor some players but it seems like PSU is trying to rub salt in the wound. As they say in comedy...too soon?

It's a bit of a quirk of the calendar. There have been 13 Leap Days between 17-Sept-1966 and 17-Sept-2016 and a result Saturdays fall on the same days during September (this isn't the case for September 1965 and September 2015).

It's the exact 50-year anniversary and thus the "demand that PSU must do something" (from certain folk) is greater.

If the 17th had been any other day of the week (or if PSU was on the road or a bye week), this probably would have been ignored completely.

LOL. That is funny.

I do understand loyalty and gratitude for what Paterno contributed to PSU. I don't think Paterno is some bad guy at all. It just seems the radical faction is pushing so hard back that it just undermines the concept of letting sleeping dogs lie.

Paterno is not a bad guy? What planet do you live in? He knew about all that was going on with his coaches and teams and he put football ahead of humanity, kids, etc in the worst way. He is equally as guilty. Shame on PSU - makes me sick. I hope Penn State loses all their games!

Thanks for the "new" perspective. It's not like the "JoePa is a bad guy" opinion hasn't been voiced for 5 years now.

He was talking to me and all you're doing is attempting to take this thread down a road that is very well-worn. EVERY damn thread doesn't need to devolve into the same well-worn talking points.

I think Paterno is old school and didn't know how to handle rumors. Didn't want to know. You are judging someone who comes from a different generation.

Not saying what Paterno did was right or appropriate but to take this one failing (as michnittlion) as the defining reflection of who he is a person is an extreme reaction.

Would you like me to judge you on your worst act? Tell me the worst thing you have done in your life...as a brother or boyfriend/husband or son and let's see how your worst act makes you look on this board.

I'm sorry but you are complete idiot if you think Paterno did not know how to handle this? Are you serious??? This was the 1970s not the caveman era. Multiple complaints and he did not know how to handle this? Really dude? Are you that ignorant and blinded? Seeing and knowing about a crime under your nose and leadership and choosing to ignore it has nothing to do with old school versus new school. And this wasn't a petty - extra practice, etc - this was a heinous crime!

You have kids RM? You probably don't because if that happened to one of your sons, I am sure your reaction would be different.

And MichNitton - I don't give a crap about what you think I am responding to but I am responding to a statement that says "Paterno is not a bad guy" regardless of the context. Now, if you don't like that you should get Reality Man's number and you both can have a private chat - but this is a logged in public board.

Fine, cool. Maybe pnnylion will come over and chime in too! He'll bring "new" perspective as well!

The 11 Warriors blog article as regards Paterno (if you bother to read it) --- if you can see his point, you'll recognize you are part of what he's talking about. This again???
