reporters. He is making a statement that Michigan fans have learned first hand the hard way. Now maybe the writer (Herd?) is trying to protect Franklin or legitimately pointing out that recruiting matters but nowhere in the article does he reference Harbaugh and what all of us Michigan fans understand after approximately 10 years of Meyer, Tressel and Dantonio that COACHING IS THE KEY. Without coaching then the recruiting won't matter nearly as much.

Trust us. If Harbaugh had the PSU team and Hoke had the UM team it would have been one heck of a game. Here you go.

One mitigating factor is that Michigan’s roster is loaded with talented, experienced seniors, while Penn State’s is nearly devoid of such players. Whatever his faults, Brady Hoke was a terrific recruiter. He landed the No. 7 class in the country in 2012 according to Rrivals.comand the No. 5 class in 2013. Those players are now the backbone of the fourth-ranked team in the country.

Of course coaching matters. I'm confused, have I ever argued that it didn't matter?

I will disagree on one thing: U-M with Hoke still easily beats PSU with Harbaugh today. Even Hoke --- perhaps accidentally, but he would have stumbled on it sooner or later over the course of a game --- would have realized a simple rush the ball man ball attack would get it done today. That was an incredibly weak PSU LB corps, one that was also struggling to fundamentally tackle.

Of course, Harbaugh wouldn't have kicked a FG when down 28-0 from the opponent's 2 yard line either. That's the only thing that pissed me off today. That's no way to tell your players you're behind them when they're out-manned but still trying hard, giving 100%, and not quitting.

First, Glad you mentioned your lb'ers. Some of these UM fans are optimistic about the UM running game.Well yeah if you could run against those PSU lb'ers I could run for 50 yards. :)

That #31...it was like you were playing 10 on 11. I felt bad for you guys. It looked like you had high school guys at lb'er for most of the game. They looked like tall corners. I did think Barkley looked good. That guy would be a star on a really good team. He will definitely make an NFL roster. Really liked him. Is there a way UM can trade a defensive tackle for Barkley? Just for this year. How about Charlton and I'll throw in Winovich or if you prefer...Furbush.

Here is where we have a slight disagreement. Franklin is a better coach than Hoke. Trust me on this...Hoke could screw up almost any team. Now when I say Hoke vs. Harbaugh...I am talking about the entire game plan so what makes you think UM would have good plays developed during the week? Don't underestimate the total incompetence of Hoke. I just don't think you appreciate how POOR of a coach Hoke is relative to his historical peers.

We are talking Bobby Williams to Gerry Faust range here. Harbaugh would have Barkley and your wr's are pretty good. Not saying Harbaugh would win but I can almost guarantee you that the game would have been competitive. You think you have it bad now...go hire Hoke as your next coach and let me know. Your teams are much better coached than Hoke could coach in his dreams.

I will say this...Franklin is ungawdly bad at in game decisions. Awful. He isn't going to make it as PSU.

The point of the paragraph was to show how some PSU writers/supporters are trying to explain how UM is so much better than PSU. That plays a factor but last year was also a good example of what a good coach does with any team.

You can have great recruiting classes but you need to develop. It's what makes Dantonio so good. I really believe a great game coach (see opposite in Miles) makes a 1-2 game win difference each year. A great coach who can truly develop makes a 1-2 game difference. A great coach who can inspire and motivate makes a 1-2 game difference.

Do the math...anywhere from 3-6 games per year. Last year UM is probably 6-6 because Rudock wouldn't have been on the roster, etc.

A better example would be if Dantonio and Kelly switched places. I'll be you ND is no worse than 2-2 right now if not 3-1.

Yeah --- #31, he is a (4-star) true freshman. He should be red-shirting. I do see his long-term future as a stand-up DE or even a TE --- but not LB. But circumstances dictate ....

I thought #33 (Jake Cooper) was much worse, and he doesn't have the excuse of being a green true freshman. He's a junior. But again, circumstances dictate ...

As regards Franklin vs. Hoke, there is one fact that will likely remain. Franklin is 0-1 career all-time against Hoke. In a game he was winning 13-10, in the mid 3rd-quarter, facing a 4th-and-8 from his own side of mid-field, against an offense that wasn't showing too much signs of competence, and when the defense is the strength of your own team ------ Franklin called a fake punt. Ugh.

I have a question for you.
Do people always get banned from bwi for speaking their mind while still not violating board rules?

I don't know what specifically you may have posted there ---- but I will say this.

If:

(1) you're on an opposition board within 24 hours of your team delivering a decisive victory over that team,

(2) there's a long-standing history of posters from your home board (this board) making fun of folk from the opposition board (BWI), and

(3) you had the post you made at 9:42 PM in this thread .... https://michigan.forums.rivals.com/...rnoon-entertainment-stop.187000/#post-2884097

You're not going to get the benefit of the doubt.

Do you really think otherwise?

Go to the link Detroitjohn posted to bwi and go to page 18 or 19 of that thread, read my comments. Tell me if you think they're offensive in anyway.

Penn State is in trouble, don't you think? Hoke didn't save you before and he can't help you now.

I never thought "Hoke would save Penn State." Huh? Hoke never coached Penn State. And why do you think I think he'd help us now?

I'm not sure what road you're trying to go down with your last 2 posts --- feels like you're trying to pick a fight. But I'm out until you make a quasi-intelligent post.

Play nice boys. Hoke isn't the answer for any college football program unless they want to hire him as a DL position coach.

My purpose of bringing up Hoke was to acknowledge that you need at least competent coaching if you obtain high end talent. Both UM and PSU fans know that all too well. The reporter from PSU (NOT michnittlion) wants to believe the reason for the rapid success of UM is due to those highly ranked early UM classes.

Not exactly. Put Hoke as coach and UM is probably 6-6 last year. Put Hoke on this team and UM is probably 6-6 again this year. A great coach recruits for his system and style of play. A great coach develops his talent. A great coach game plans and adapts. A great coach inspires and motivates. Hoke isn't that guy. I don't think Franklin is that guy in every aspect. The end has not been written but some PSU reporters haven't learned that lesson yet.

Maybe blinded by their hatred of Harbaugh? By envy? Look...there were alot of UM fans who were in denial just a few years ago on how good Dantonio was as a coach.
