2020 has been a trying year due to COVID, but Michigan football was worth the wait. Strong O-line recruiting looks to finally be paying off. Early indications are we may have also found the key missing piece...a QB. Speight, O'Korn, Patterson, Peters.. all were good kids but none were Championship level QB's. Milton did not take bad sacks, did not look hesitant on RPO's, did not turn the ball over. Very promising performance. QB is a such a key component to winning in todays college football (See OSU/Alabama/Clemson). Could Milton help us crack the code and become part of the CFP discussion? We will see. But reason for enthusiasm with what appears to be a solid O-line and QB abound.

Diverse offensive play-calling that keeps defenses off balance while exploiting defensive personnel and formations is a sign the offensive coordinator is in control. Gattis sure was in control in this opener. Avoiding mistakes, making plays, putting up points...These are all part of the CFP elite. Yes, our defense was not stout. However, there is talent there and plays were made. Barrett, Dax, Cam, Paye, Hutchinson, Jeter. There is a lot to like here. We have so much youth in the secondary. There will be some big plays given up.

Modern college football does not feature many 13-7 wins anymore. Championship caliber teams such as Clemson will surrender 20+ points, but they get timely crucial stops, hold teams to FG over TD's and generate turnovers. Modern elite teams score in the 30+ points per game range and allow 20+ points to good competition. This is how the game is played now. I see a Michigan team now looking modernized and ready to compete. Are we ready to beat OSU and punch a CFP ticket? That remains to be seen. There is still so much to be done before that could become a reality. However, this first glimpse at Minnesota, beating a ranked team on the road in a season opener... solid QB play, diverse offensive play-calling, exceptional O-line play and a resounding win sure can get a Wolverine fan excited about where we are headed. Fun to see that Harbaugh can evolve and modernize.

It will be exciting to see if this team can steadily improve, if Milton can make the big plays in a tight game. If we truly can establish ourselves as a modernized team to be reckoned with.

Looking forward to introducing Sparty to Milton and our evolving team next week...
