Hackenberg turning Pro. Is that good or bad for PSU? I don't know**

I respect Hackenberg and will root for him at the next level ---- but for whatever reason (and there are about 1,000 different theories on such), he never progressed in either the 2014 or 2015 seasons.

My theory is that it's a combination of (a) mutual dislike between Hackenberg and Coach Franklin, and (b) Hackenberg still pining to be coached by someone like Bill O'Brien (those two definitely connected). As to point (b): that's a sign of a bit of a character flaw. When the old boss you loved moves on, you may eventually wind up working with him again, but you do owe it to your new boss to give your best effort in the meantime.

Anyway --- it wasn't working. So best for both parties to move on.

As for Franklin: there have been more than a few comparisons made between him and Brady Hoke. Not an incorrect comparison. Except for this: Franklin, after 2 years, may be where Hoke was after 3 years. The seat is getting hot.

I feel sorry for Hack as he played his guts out as a freshman and then got stuck with Franklin, who by now we all realize is no coaching genius. Hack's productivity mirrored crappy play calling, an OL that reminded me of the UM OL prior to JH, and an overall lack of energy. As the above poster noted, similar to Hoke's tenure. He'll do well with the right NFL coach.

Question, as I don't follow PSU like you do-I see the Hoke comparison, but Franklin can't possibly have as inept a staff as Clappy, can he? That was a big factor with Hoke's epic fail.

Most of the PSU staff came over from Vanderbilt from Franklin.

Outside of our offensive line coach --- Herb "the Chef" Hand, a man who regularly appears on reality cooking shows on the Food Network (no, I am not making that up!!!) --- I don't think anyone on the staff is terrible.

PSU's now-former (today was his last game, a new guy comes in for 2016) OC gets a lot of heat from our fanbase --- but I thought that was a bit unfair. Franklin himself was an OC at both Maryland and K-State, so ...... I'm pinning a lot of the offense on Franklin. He could make some damn contributions himself.

Franklin's gotta get it going --- given the 2 years of empirical evidence at PSU, I do think HE is pretty terrible.

I think most reasonable people would have questions about Franklin. Does sort of come across as a rah rah cheer guy but with some coordinating experience.

If I had to guess...Franklin will not make it even though he will have some talent because he is in the East. If he was in the West...I think he would survive for a long period of time. The fact that PSU struggled mightily for awhile during the Paterno era has sort of given PSU some perspective that winning the same way in 70's is probably not realistic and you should give coaches plenty of time to proof or disprove themselves.

By the way...Franklin is no Hoke. If you want to insult Franklin...maybe compare him to Tommy Amaker...a competent person who should not have a job like PSU football/UM basketball.

At least your awful O line coach has the cooking thing going on. I'm not sure why Clappy ever thought Funk was a good idea, or how he didn't fire him when we had possibly the worst O line in college FB a couple years ago.

Hey CBF...funny you bring up that topic.

I traveled to the KSU game (Buffalo Wild Wings) game in Tempe. Talk about an embarrassment. I am having the conversation with some people around me and I tell them Hoke isn't stupid (at the time) and that he must see what is going on (no offensive identity) and will have to make a change.

Well he did...Borges was fired. Now to your point. Why Hoke kept Funk around...I don't know. Wasn't there a story where Hutchinson was teaching some lineman? The OL was incompetent. Incompetent but that shouldn't be a surprise because HOKE was incompetent.

Hoke was stupid. The guy was a modern day coaching Buffoon. I would be hard pressed to give you that many reasons Hoke was better than Ellerbe. Two of the worst coaches that will ever be a head coach during the history of UM football and basketball.

There is no coach in the history of UM football that was more incompetent on the field than Hoke. Hoke was some version of Gerry Faust. They could have been brothers.

My sympathies that you had to endure that bowl game in person.
When Clappy fired Borges, I remember thinking we'll never know what a Borges offense could really look like because we absolutely don't block anyone. That one season we just about led the nation in giving up tackles for loss, and we ranked about 100 in rushing.
Not saying he should have kept Borges or not, but Funk was the gigantic problem there, in my opinion. Switching OCs while retaining Funk was just a band aid.

It is not turning pro it is escaping from Franklin and his marginal coaching. Hack mentioned everyone at the University except Franklin in his exit speech. A lot of hard feeling there if you ask me.
