As Don Corleone once famously said, I’m a superstitious man.

And this year I was sure I’d finally found the right game day routine to ensure victory today, at least based on the first 7 games of the season. Unfortunately I was forced to break the routine today for circumstances beyond my control, and the results were obviously a disaster.

I didn’t want to say anything about it during the winning streak because it would be like talking about a no hitter in the 5th or 6th inning, but now that it’s over I can spill the beans.

So what was my routine and what did I fail to do? Several items, and oddly watching the full game was not one of them (I was late to several this year because my daughter’s soccer games were on Saturdays at noon before the season ended last week). Warning: The following may contain TMI but FU we lost to MSU.

- Wardrobe: Maize Nike Dri Fit HAIL shirt in block blue letters with black gym shorts and lucky blue and yellow boxers.

- Go for a 3.5-4.5 mile run in the morning in this gear. Do not change out of these clothes or shower until after the game ends. Especially pleasant strategy for the Nebraska night game.

- Don’t watch any pre game whatsoever, not a second of it.

- Watch the game in my pool house, not my regular man cave or living room. Just replaced my TV in the pool house this summer with a brand new LG OLED, so until today I had not seen Michigan lose a game on that specific television.

- Sit on the middle cushion of the couch, not the right or the left.

- Get up and pace around like a psycho during all commercial breaks.

That was it, nothing more to it other than sitting by myself and smelling terrible. I didn’t execute all of this for the Rutgers game because I was out of town and it almost cost us in the second half, but you can afford to take risks with Rutgers. Much less so in a rivalry game.

So what went wrong today? First off was the weather. It rained a ton all day which eliminated the morning run. Knowing this was a risk, I made a backup plan to workout inside instead. But then all hell broke loose for me at work this week, causing me to have to do a bunch of work this morning before the game and skip the workout entirely.

I still had the wardrobe, but not the accompanying workout. This messed with my timing, so I actually turned on the game right at noon and accidentally caught the last 2 minutes of the Fox pre game show. I turned it off but the damage had already been done.

I believe the combination of these two events led to the team’s demise today, even morseo than our inability to run proper substitutions on defense. I apologize to the team and the fan base for this tragic set of circumstances.

As the incomparable Milli Vanilli once said, blame it on the rain.
