Maryland on Saturday night. The BYU game is over now and Michigan is now ranked and getting some positive media for the first time in many years. Nice to see the domination of a good football team but we still have lots of improvement to make just taking it week by week. No bragging on my part except for those idiots that have made ignorant comments about Jim Harbaugh and how it was going to take years and years to make progress at Michigan and he would have to get 3 full recruiting classes before any results would surface. No clue about the game of football- just writers who probably hauled water for their high school teams.

Tell you the truth, I'm starting to get a little sick of the hype already.

The media needs to wait until November before they decide to put angel wings on the team or string them up.

well, letdown in this context might be like the letdown vs UNLV after beating the snot out of Oregon St. Maryland might crack the 225 yard total mark & no shutout.. lol

but I still think we win by double digits..

Here's the thing - and SCfanblue hopefully you read this. I know you coach HS football and all that but rankings do matter as far as recruiting is concerned - and seriously man, pick a stance...one day you say recruiting stars does not matter and the next day you say it does :). Statistically teams that recruit more 4-5 stars perform way better on the field and that has held true for years - so unless the "money scheme" of rankings and stats are completely coincidence and have been for years, recruiting rankings do matter. Hoke recruited some talent that played well in HS - meaning they had the athleticism, football IQ, potential, etc in HS and were the cream of the crop - the challenge is they were not developed as well along the journey they took.

I don't think JH's journey to success will take as long as people think because he has inherited some very good talent. Now, he does have some major gaps in skilled positions - like QB, WR, etc because Hoke just felt like a bunch of 300lbs folks was all that was needed to win. I think JH's team will start to perform better and better each and every game. Record's may not indicate our improvement because we have a tough slate this year and next year but I expect the product you see on the field will be really good and I really believe we will be in every single game this year as well.

Do I think "Michigan is all of a sudden the team to beat in the BIG" - absolutely not. Too early to tell, and too soon. Do I think "Michigan will not be an easy or likely W for opposing teams every time they play us" - hell yes. I don't think any team - including OSU and MSU - will now feel like they can waltz in and beat us. We may very well end up 8-4 but those 4 losses won't feel like blowouts but rather I think we will realize we had a chance in each of those 4 games. I am still sticking to my optimism that we end up 10-2 before a great bowl game. I bet you that JH knows that if we somehow go 9-3 but lose to both OSU and MSU, we will get a lot of slack about how we have a ways to go and that does effect the team's confidence. He also knows that if he goes 8-4 and beats both MSU & OSU that has the opposite effect - inconsistent but they will be really good. I do think JH notches a win against at least MSU or OSU if not both - I think the talent gap is not that wide...MSU is not that supremely more talented then we are, etc.

Next week is not a cakewalk for us - we have still not proven we know how to win on the road so that is the first step. After that we face a very good NW defensively that knows how to stop the JH type offenses (see what they did to Stanford). I think that will be a very low scoring defensive battle but if we somehow beat them, I will be brimming with optimism going into the MSU game.

I don't see a let down. Have you read about how horrible the QB situation is at Maryland?
I'm predicting 34-9 score in UM's favor.

Yes, there are some of these "ranked athletes" by Rivals that do pan out, however, many of them do not and it is a money scheme. What matters is coaching and the development from high school to the Division I college game. All of the schools that recruit these athletes have great coaching staffs who know how to develop their players and many of these great recruting classes have NOT led to national championships each and every year. I know what I am talking about. The recruitment process is out of hand right now and a massive amount of great athletes who CAN GRADUATE from college are overlooked. Why do you think there is so much parity in college football right now? The Big 10 struggled with the MAC this past weekend once again and Purdue even lost to Bowling Green. There were probably 20 kids on the BG roster who were talented enough to play at Purdue. Northwestern also struggled with Ohio University and they are ranked #16. There are a HUGE amount of kids who develop going into their Senior year when they gain the experience and finally the size to play college ball. They get overlooked because RIVALS stars were awarded to a kid who was physically developed a bit earlier or perhaps played better when they were a sophomore. I have a player on my team right now who is rated with a high number of "Stars" and he is no where near the talent of some of the kids in the same position across our state. His Dad has been taking him to Rivals combines since he was a freshman. He has offers from some huge schools and we are all scratching our heads about it. Nevertheless, it is great for him and we wish him nothing but the best as he heads off to play somehere next year. I guess you have to be in it to really see it for what it is beyond what you read or see on ESPN.

That's a fair point - can't argue with that. Teams basically reward performance Soph/Jr year as well as size then.
