Yes, great. For multiple reasons.
1. OU zone defense is something we needed to see, so we can know our response to it. Which is much more of Dickinson and Williams. They play well together and seemed to know what Coach wanted more than any starter.
2. Coach Howard needed to see if he could trust the freshmen in case our 1 dimensional offensive players like Smith, Brooks and occasionally Livers (and surprisingly Franz so far) were stuck during the game. And he can. Again, Hunter and Terrence provided a spark, and stabilized the team. Along with some very mature minutes from Brooks down the stretch. IMO, we’ll need Zeb to get sprung up quickly. He’s VERY athletic and has the potential to be much better defensively than the current options at guard.
3. Howard is still trying to find the right lineup, and he possibly found one. Again, IMO our best lineup includes Hunter. Although I would love to see Brown start because he is unquestionably our best defensive player, he’s probably best coming off the bench. I know some may think I’m crazy but if I were Howard the goal by midseason would be to start Zeb. 🤷🏾♂️ Zeb, Eli, Franz, Livers and Hunter will be our best lineup with this current group. Brown, Johns, Smith and T Williams off the bench would be very productive.
Those are my thoughts. I thought this game was very important early on. And BTW, I loved seeing Coach pissing vinegar at the players and refs.
