1. 8 assists on 24 baskets. That says all you need to say about our offense. Sure we missed some bunnies which could/would have been assists if we had converted. However, there was little ball movement and little off the ball movement. Lots of hero ball today, completely the opposite of what has gotten us off to the start we've had. Hopefully, a lot of learning will come out of that one.
2. Charles Matthews and Zavier Simpson were 5-7 from 3. Matthews made 9 of his last 10 from the line. Simpson's man scored 31. Austin Davis outscored Jon Teske, and scored as many points as Iggy Brazdeikis. I'm dreaming, right?
3. I can't describe how sloppy we were on offense. Matthews leading a break with numbers without getting it to a guard and then shoveling it to Simpson under the basket amongst the trees. Jordan Poole rejecting a screen when his man was overplaying him to do just that and getting his pocket picked. Brazdeikis trying to plow head down through several defenders with guys wide open. I could go on and on.
4. Defensively, we did a great job on Seth Dugan and, except on a very few occasions, remembered and followed the scouting report (he goes right ALWAYS, and can't shoot it going the other way). WMU had 4 assists themselves against 16 turnovers. Flowers was great, and made some tough shots--I thought we guarded him OK much of the time, though he muscled Z a few times. We lost their shooter (Printy) several times, which is not characteristic. It wasn't our best effort by any means--any time, an opposing team shoots 55%+ from 2, it's not good, no matter how tough the shots were, and WMU is not a good team. It wasn't nearly as bad though as out offensive performance.
5. I'm glad for Z. Hitting those 3 3s will hopefully improve his confidence, and force teams to guard him on the perimeter. If we go back to playing team basketball on the offensive end, that will help a lot.
6. Poole has really improved on defense--4 steals and some very nice positional defending as well. And he made key 3s as well. There were some wtf moments--the aforementioned strip, the missed breakaway dunk when it was clear watching before it happened that his footwork to dunk was off, etc.--but overall, he was far from the problem.
7. While this was a good match-up for him, I thought Austin Davis played pretty well.
8.After a ridiculously good start, we've hit a lull over the past two weeks. There are some things to clean up, and Iggy has to get back to how he was playing on the offensive and defensive ends. The good news is that we've won and it hasn't cost us.
