the blows to your nose can be fatal in addition to causing long term health problems. I believe, in hand-to-hand combat, they teach a blow to the underside of your nose that pushes bone fragments into the brain. There is a bony plate that is perforated with tiny pores that allow the nerves for sensing smell to pass from the brain tissue to the nasal epithelium. The name of this bony plate is called the Cribriform Plate.

I don't have the expertise to explain all that can happen when this plate is traumatized or fractured. You can use your search engine by just printing "cribriform plate" and press "enter" and several choices will allow you to read up on the damage to you if your nose is i involved by any traumatic event.

Some folks have suggested not wearing protective devices when playing football. They think by doing that players will limit their use of their head as a battering ram leading to traumatic head injuries.

Without protective equipment an offensive player may receive an elbow upper cut to his face, instead of a head, but the result may be very dangerous - a fracture to the nose and the cribriform plate.

Read up and see what you think if you have young kids attempt to play football without knowing the danger. It can happen. It is a terrible accident to suffer through.
