The #11 Michigan field hockey team kicked off their season today with a stunning 3-2 upset of #1 ranked North Carolina.

Lots of craziness in this game. Game was 0-0 at half despite UNC outshooting Michigan 9-1. Then in the first 90 seconds of the 2nd half Michigan scores twice, (that's basically as common as a soccer team scoring twice in the first 90 seconds of a half...it doesn't really happen at all).

Michigan would score again a few minutes later to go up 3-0. Not sure what kind of halftime speech Coach Pankratz gave the team, but it was apparently one of the best ever.

Then with just under 20 minutes to go, UNC pulls their goalie (that is not a typo). The rest of the game was basically a relentless assault by UNC. They scored twice quickly to make it 3-2 with over 10 to play. Michigan was able to hold on though, with their all-world goalie Sam Swenson making plenty of saves down the stretch. There were also 2 video reviews in the final minute, which made the final minute last about 10 minutes.

Unbelievably huge win for the Wolverines to start the season. UNC is a top team every year, this is a juggernaut that they just knocked off.
