This is a universal truth.

It applies in nature, business, personal life, and yes, even football.

Let's think about this from a business perspective. We bring in a new CEO in Rich Rod who attempted to change the core business model of the program. However, in addition to not having the support of key stakeholders, he proved to be inept at a core business function that happens to be a critical success factor - defense. Because of this, he fails.

Just as seen time and time again with CEO changes, a new coach is brought in who is the polar opposite of their predecessor. Brady Hoke was to return the program's direction back towards its "true north," a direction that had 100+ years of proven success. While somewhat successful in shifting the strategy back to what had been historically successful, his misplaced loyalty in his senior leaders proved to be detrimental to the execution of his strategy. Again, failure.

Enter Harbaugh, the rockstar CEO that was seemingly the perfect fit - a deep understanding of the historical core values and business model that has seen success, and the capability to execute it at the highest possible level.

Ideal scenario right? Yes and no. Yes, his execution has been better than his predecessors which has led to success over competition that we expect to beat - those with FAR less resources. However, the competitive landscape has continued to evolve with our true competitors, the leaders in the industry - OSU, Bama, Clemson, etc. It has evolved to the point that our core business model is no longer able to compete even when executed at a high level.

The new CEO is generating shareholder return - 10 win seasons, and wins over competition who we should be beating - MSU. He's not going anywhere anytime soon. The question is whether he is content with that, or whether his goal is to beat the best which will require a fundamental shift in his business model.

Unfortunately for all of us emotional share holders, we won't have that answer until 2019.
