The correct play was to knee it three times, and then kick the chip shot FG with barely any time left to go up 4. The ONLY way you lose is to score a TD.
This isn’t hindsight either. I was sitting with my brother and said, “watch, Franklin is dumb enough to score here to keep IU in it” while they were reviewing the targeting (before PSU even took the field on offense).
Then, with 11 seconds left (in regulation) AND one timeout, he attempts a 57 yarder to win. I was screaming why aren’t they getting the free 8-12 yard sideline out every defense concedes in that situation. Basically exactly what Harbaugh/Milton/Gattis did right before the half. Clifford hits that pass all day. Hell, he could’ve run for 10 with a timeout.
The FG missed by a yard or two.
