Don Brown from Boston College new UM DC

According to Bruce Feldman from Bleacher Report. I have no idea on his bona fides[/
Watched several BC games this year as there's a kid from my daughters HS playing DB there. BCs defense was their strongest unit, however the team, as a whole didn't do much for me. I'm guessing since JH wants him he must be up and coming, but honestly.....you gotta admit.....thought someone with a higher profile would get that job. The kid I know on the team played as a true freshman and made some plays but he too, didn't strike me as Power 5 material in HS. He was clearly coached up. BC does not have a very deep roster, so they do ok with what they have.

NFL experience, top ranked defense, coordinator of the year last year - sounds like a solid get to me. Not sure why you think he's not that good. He coached underclassmen and that D kept BC in every game including shutting down a very potent ND offense.

This is an unbelievable hire for you guys. He's an older guy (60), but he runs such a complex and innovative style. Blitzes about 65% of the time and his defense is predicated on having physical and athletic DBs. Peppers is going to thrive in this system.

He likes the amoeba defense so the QB never has an idea where the blitzer is coming from. He took a bunch of 2 and 3 star recruits and put together the best defense in the country. They also had the luxury of playing with one of the worst P5 offenses I've ever seen. I'm incredibly torn apart at losing him, but I'm happy that he'll be able to compete for a national title with Michigan. He's going to generate so much goddamn havoc. We ended the season with over 110 TFLs... you got a great one.

Thanks for that. Pretty gracious of you.

Your gain is our loss.....my sister is a UM grad (BA and MA)..have visited "double A" a few times; as if our (BC's) program was not bad enough, this makes it worse. The rich get richer....

With Don Brown as your defensive coordinator, two things will happen: 1) Wolverines will not lose again to OSU and 2) UM will be a CFP team. Happy for you sad for us.

Shiano > Brown! No way Brown is going to be the difference in Michigan beating Ohio State. Get over your delusions Wolverine nation!!!

Well he's a BC fan so maybe you should read a little more carefully. Actually, Schiano is a joke. Sorry to burst your bubble

Interesting that you love Schiano so much you can't even spell his name right. You're kind of stupid even for a TUOS fan.

Love the hire. I think Harbaugh does too and knows Coach Brown will not be entertaining any head coaching offers any time soon, if ever! Go Blue!

This will be the third DC in three years for the defense. There may be some adjustment to the implementing of a third scheme in so short of time. There is a blitz heavy component to his schemes and with new LB's starting next year it could take some time to get is all working together. Maybe the four hour on the field spring practices will get everyone on the same page.

There is a disadvantage you will have when you don't have continuity for sure year in and year out. It takes a lot of time for kids to learn highly complex schemes so you are correct. That is part of the reason I also like this hire - he seems like someone that will not be one and done like Durkin. I see him staying for 3+ years potentially. He's 60 years old so not sure if he really wants a HC gig or not either - never know.
Having said all of that, the team actually played really well on defense other then 2 major components that killed us:
  1. Fundamental issues in tackling
  2. Slowness of our LBs
I think regardless of coach, we need to shore up our LB play and we will be fine. Don't forget that this year we also get 15 extra bowl practices I believe that we did not get last year.

I think Brown will be happy with the talent he is inheriting. The question is how fast can he implement his schemes but he does have a more mature defense.

To the poster above...Peppers is going to be happy. I think Bush may be able to get on the field because of his blitzing ability. I think Tarun is right...it's really important that UM keeps this guy around for a few years.

Linebackers may initially be a concern but Brown is going to feel like a kid in a candy store. I expect this defense to be even better this coming year because of (in theory) more depth on the dline which really hurt UM late in the season and losing Bolden will be addition by subtraction. :)

Not a joke either.

Being a good coordinator is much more than understanding schemes. Relating to the players by demanding hard work and then praising them for it after holding them accountable for their mistakes is critical. Also, the ability to adjust during the game on both sides of the ball is probably the most important aspect beyond game week preparation. Don Brown has a proven track record as a DC and a HC. The question will be how he jells with Mattison, Zordich and the other guys. It is a rare that any coordinator coming into a program agrees to inherit position coaches. The coaches in place are excellent so it is important they stay.
