Do you believe this report? I doubt it but possible...

I could see it but who knows what the powers at be are thinking.

I've read stories/heard a few things about Nebraska a few times over the last 1-2 years. I do think there's some desire for this among Nebraska admins and boosters. I have family & friends out in West Nebraska and Colorado: I honestly think Nebraska is a better cultural fit for a Great Plains conference.

Ultimately, though, the B1G $ is too good. They won't move.

I-35 is sort of a dividing point in that part of America:

(1) If you are east of I-35 (University of Iowa, University of Minnesota), you're more liable to "point east" (toward Chicago) in terms of where your alums land and where the best cultural fit is.

(2) If you are west of I-35 (Iowa State, Nebraska, the Kansas schools), you're more liable to "point south and west" (toward Texas and Denver) in terms of alumni landing spots and cultural fit.

As a Husker fan I can tell you, without a doubt, that this article is complete bull crap!
The vast majority of Nebraska fans are happy in the Big Ten, and an even larger majority of the administration.
One of the ONLY reasons Nebraska misses the Big 12 was our rivalry with OU. This writer says that Nebraska would join and OU would walk... yeah right. Nebraska is not going back to the Big 12, but they would surely never go back under those circumstances!

This will never happen, and it's funny that these rumors persist!
Some good points you made along with others.

Seems like Nebraska is in a good division in the Big Ten and can consistently do well so I don't know why most Nebraskans would want to leave. The BT is a step up...not a step down.

The crazy segment of PSU fans (sorry michnittlion) feel like they haven't won as much in the Big Ten vs. their independent glory years which is always tough on the ego but I think PSU is happy being in a really good conference. Maybe they secretly love the competition but publicly complain.

I could see why romanticizing about yesteryear would be attractive but it's doesn't seem logical. More money? No. Answer to Texas? Ask A&M. No Oklahoma? Maybe they miss that rivalry game...just bring it back in non-conference.

One place I feel Nebraska and PSU are a bit alike:

PSU joined the B1G but didn't have conference-mates in states where a large number of PSU alumni live (the NYC-Washington D.C-North Carolina corridor).

PSU fans travel well. But its still nice to have close games. The inclusion of Maryland & Rutgers --- while not necessarily well-liked by other B1G schools --- has definitely been beneficial in terms of PSU fans/alums being more able to see their team.

Nebraska travels well but joined a B1G that doesn't have conference-mates in Colorado or the Kansas-Texas corridor. Same dynamic. I'm serious when I say this: there are more Cornhusker fans living in Denver than Buffalo fans. One good thing: Nebraska is playing Colorado OOC 4 times in upcoming years (2018-19 & 2023-24).

Ideally the B1G would expand to 16 by getting 2 of Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and Colorado. I just don't think it's politically possible to pull that off. (1) Colorado was on the table in 2010 but now they're in the Pac-12. (2) Oklahoma can't move if OK-State doesn't also have a soft landing. (3) Same deal with Kansas and K-State. (4) Texas, of course, is one big mess all to themselves: state politics, their TV network, and their enormously out-sized ego.

yes, we've sacrificed tens of millions of dollars over the last six years buying into the big ten network so we can jump ship right as we are to finally see returns on that investment with full B1G revenue sharing membership, all to rejoin the tire fire that is the big 12.

who comes up with this sh!t...and who believes it for second?

Plus all the whining about Texas before they left the Big 12...

I would hope that Nebraska people don't want to leave. I like them in the Big Ten.

I would like to boot Rutgers and Maryland, though. As soon as the unbundling movement gets going and not everybody is required to pay for ESPN, having those teams will seem like a bad idea.

Actually, it already is a bad idea. More money without paying players just leads to higher salaries for coaches, more support staff, nicer weight rooms, and a whole lot more that has no benefit to fans.

What good is all the extra money if Purdue is just going to hire Darrell Hazell?

Maybe we could get rid of PSU and bring in OU. That would be a win all the way around:

1. The B1G wouldn't have to listen to PSU fans incessantly whining about conspiracies and how bad they hate being in this conference.

2. The PSU fans would get what they've been crying for all these years.

3. NU and OU would get to renew their annual rivalry.

I don't see a downside.

I don't think people give enough credit to the academic advantages of being in the Big 10. The Nebraska faculty, I'm sure, would overwhelmingly wish to stay. Yeah, the athletics brings in a ton of money being in the Big 10, but certain research and academic benefits are also quietly making this a better deal for them to stay.

well if you've heard it, it must be true. donald...is that you?

1) as an alum and lifelong resident there really isn't. 2) go on about the major cultural differences that distinguish iowa, minnnesota, wisconsion, illinois, and indiana from nebraska. and also how those differences are lessened when compared to texas or oklahoma, and please also address the season of winter in your reply. thanks.

You are correct. I know for a fact that the administration and faculty at Nebraska like the academic benefits of the Big Ten.
Many of the people in leadership, from the Chancellor, the President and members of the Board of Regents, have publicly stated that exact sentiment.

As a fan, I do miss the easier travel times and the old rivalries from the days of the Big 8. But those days are gone forever. Colorado is in the Pac, Missouri is in the SEC, and those who remain have sold their souls to Texas. I certainly don't miss the instability and hoping that the upcoming game at Oklahoma State is actually on TV!
Many fans like to criticize Osborne as an AD, as well as former Chancellor Perlman, but they had the foresight to see the future of college football and the Big 12. The best thing they did was to work out an agreement with the Big Ten and get out of the Big 12.
People are crazy if they really believe the Huskers want to go back to that!

Well said. Money has ruined many of the traditional rivalries sadly. I am disappointed that Michigan will play Nebraska infrequently due to the additions of Maryland and Rutgers.

Maybe we can just do a straight up trade with the Big12, trading psu for OU.
Its a win win really.
OU would be in a better conference and psu will play some teams that they could probably beat.

Except that the PSU fans are convinced that the ACC is where they need to be.
