Here are tonight's Blue Chips...
*** This weekend gave me another opportunity to see five-star 2022 Grosse Pointe (Mich.) South cornerback Will Johnson live at the Legacy Pylon 7v7 tournament. This was my first time seeing Johnson since early in the fall, so it was great to get an updated eval. It seems like every time I see Johnson he grows another inch. He may very well be 6-foot-3 now. But the good news is Johnson doesn't look uncomfortable at his height. He moves extremely well and has great hips. Often guys his size lack flexibility, but Johnson does a nice job of turning, and he's faster than you think. Johnson used his length and physicality to overpower receivers throughout the event. He also showed some patience and did his best to bait quarterbacks to no avail. Johnson just didn't see much action come his way. When one quarterback did try to take a deep shot on him, he came down with an interception. It was another impressive outing for the future Wolverine.
*** Dillon Tatum continues to impress me with his versatility. The four-star 2022 athlete out of West Bloomfield (Mich.) High did a little bit of everything for Sound Mind Sound Body's Max Ex team in the secondary. Tatum played mostly a nickel role where he was responsible for covering opposing slot receivers, but he also played some boundary corner, safety and even a little bit of linebacker. I really like the flexibility that Tatum offers. Michigan is recruiting him as a safety, but he really is a player you can stick anywhere. He's not tall or long like Johnson, but he has great natural instincts and always seems to be around the football. He had an interception early in the event, came away with several pass breakups and flashed elite speed when coming downhill to make stops. Tatum reminds me of a prospect I used to cover named D'Shawn Jamison, who was a former Rivals250 prospect and is now a starter in the secondary for Texas.
*** Elite 2023 Detroit (Mich.) King quarterback Dante Moore wasn't as dominant as he was when I saw him in pads this fall, but he did flash throughout the weekend. Max Ex used a two-quarterback rotation, so I think that threw off Moore's rhythm. He did make a couple of his usual wow throws, where he fit the ball in tight windows, but the consistency wasn't there. Still, I love Moore as a prospect. His ball placement is right up there with some of the best I've seen, and he has the arm strength to make high level throws anywhere on the field. Moore also has excellent footwork and mechanics. In pads, Moore is able to use his athleticism to his advantage, but obviously, he wasn't able to do that in the 7v7 setting. Overall, it was still a very good performance, but from what I've seen from Moore, I know he's capable of performing even better.
*** I did get my first look at rising 2024 River Rouge (Mich.) High wide receiver Nick Marsh, who recently notched an offer from Michigan. His team was eliminated in the first round, so unfortunately, I didn't get to see much, leaving his evaluation incomplete. Marsh also did not catch a pass in the game I saw him play in. He is a big-bodied prospect that definitely passes the eye test. At 6-foot-3, 180 pounds, he dude is extremely well built for his age. However, he did have trouble sinking his hips and getting in and out of breaks efficiently. Again, I just need to see more of Marsh, and obviously, it's still really early.
