Here are tonight's Blue Chips...
*** I have logged a new FutureCast pick in favor of Michigan to land Naples (Fla.) Palmetto Ridge athlete Kamonte Grimes. The three-star prospect is listed as a wide receiver, the Wolverines are recruiting him as a corner. As I mentioned a few days ago, Michigan is going all in for Grimes this cycle. At 6-foot-3, 200 pounds, Grimes is bigger than your average corner, but the Wolverines love him at the position. And of course, he brings versatility to move around in the secondary.
*** I was hesitant to put in a pick for Grimes for a couple of reasons. The first was that he has not made a visit to Michigan. However, as we've seen, prospects all over the country have been committing left and right without ever stepping foot on campus. The other reason was that Grimes has a December decision timeline. If he sticks to it then schools in the Southeast will have more time to get involved, and we could be left looking at a Xavier Worthy type situation.
*** With that said, I feel strongly about where Michigan stands right now. I have full reason to believe that Michigan leads and felt comfortable putting in the pick. I spoke to a source close to the program today that reiterated that they feel strongly about landing Grimes and have made him a top target over the last couple of months. I also have reason to believe that Michigan has pushed for him the hardest during the dead period.
*** So who else is in this race? Well, that's the thing. Michigan is sort of a default leader. Don't get me wrong, I'm told he really likes the program, its tradition, academics and all that good stuff. But the only other school that really seems to be pushing here is Kentucky. I think Michigan has done a better job recruiting Grimes than the Wildcats and should worry more about other schools getting involved later. Ideally, Michigan can get him to up his timeline.
